John Dalton
John Dalton was credited with being the first person to discover atoms. But in all actuality, it was Democritus during the time of Greece. No one believed him at the time because of the teachings of Plato and Socrates at the time. Sources: Our notes taken in class. -

J.J Thomson
Born in England. Discovered electron and its energy/mass ration. Sources: Our notes taken in class. -
Max Planck
Born in Germany. Founder of the Quantum Theory, 1899; used quanta (units of energy) to explain glowing matter in 1900. Sources: http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/1918/planck-bio.html -
Albert Einstein
Einstein devised a mathematical method of calculating the size of atoms and molecules in 1905. Sources: https://coraifeartaigh.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/einstein-1.pdf -
Neils Bohr
Born in Denmark. He theroized that electrons travel in specific energy levels and that spectrums of light are produced when they move from level to level. He also came up with the Planetary Model for the atom. Sources: http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/1922/bohr-bio.html -
Robert Milikan
From about 1908 to 1917, Robert Milikan measured the charge of an electron. Sources: http://chemed.chem.purdue.edu/genchem/history/millikan.html -

Ernest Rutherford
First to knowingly split an atom, discovered and named the proton. He displayed a vast understanding of the atom to be able to knowingly split it in 1919. Also discovered the different levels of radiation in 1895. Sources: our notes taken in class. -
Louis de Brogile
Born in France. He discovered that electrons can act like waves. Sources: Our notes taken in class. -
Erwin Schrödinger
Born in Austria. In 1926 he wrote apaper called the Wave Equation; said that electrons moved in waves and proved it mathematically. Sources:http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/1933/schrodinger-facts.html -
James Chadwick
Born in England. He discovered the proton and established that the number of protons in an atom determines that atomic number. Sources: http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/physics/laureates/1935/chadwick-bio.html -
