Solid Sphere Model
This is the first atomic model which was created by Democritus. It is a solid sphere, which is indivisible, -

Democritus
He said the universe was made of atoms and created an atomic theory. His theory was that all matter is made of atoms, which are invisible, solid, indestructible, and are different according to the state of the matter. He was born in Abdera, Greece. -
Antoine Lavoisier
Lavoisier experimented with elements to come up with the Law of Conservation, which says that matter can;t be created or destroyed. These experiments helped to add to the idea and understanding of the atom. He was born in Paris, France. -
Jospeh Louis Proust
He published his law of Definite Proportions, saying that the amount of elements in any compund will always be the same, leading to the idea that they could be combined to increase in size. His findings contributed to other's versions of atomic theory. He was born in Angers, France. -
John Dalton
He created an atomic theory which said that everything is made of indivisible atoms, all atoms have the same mass/properties, compounds are made from more than one element, and atoms are moved by chemical reactions. He was born in Eaglefield, in Cumberland, England. -
Michael Faraday
Faraday discovered and contibuted to the study of electromagnetism, leading to the creation of the electric motor among his other discoveries. He also created the first electric dynamo because of his theory on light. He was born in Newington Butts, in the United Kingdom. -
Henri Becquerel
Becquerel won a Nobel Peace Prize also for his assistance to the Curies with radiation. He also discovered the propetires of the element Uranium and radioactivty, which he came across accidentaly. He was born in Paris, France. -
J. J. Thomson
He was very interested in the atom and so he went on to discover electons and realized an atom can be divided, so he created the Plum Pudding model as an example, increasing general understanding of the parts of an atom. He did this by doing an experiment with a cathode ray he created. He was born in Manchester, the U.K. -
Max Planck
Planck created Quantum Theory and won a Nobel Prize in Physics for it. His theroy definied a new set of units of measurement in physics and furthered atomics. He was born in Kiel, Germany. -
Pierre Curie
Curie worked on the radioactivity experiments with his wife, Marie, sharing a Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts in atomic physics. He was born in Paris, France. -
Marie Curie
Curie created theories to seperate radium, the dangerous chemical, from the radioactive particles and atoms. She won two Nobel Peace Prizes for this and futhered atomic physics. She was born in Warsaw, Poland. -
Robert Milikan
Milikan did experiments to determine the negative charge of the electron and won a Nobel Prize for his work. He was born in Morrison, Illinois, in the U.S. -
Ernest Rutherford's Birthday
His greatest contribution was with the Gold Foil experiment, in which he found that some alpha atoms deflected back through gold foil, allowing him to create a more accurate model of the atom. He was born in Nelson in New Zealand. -
Lise Meitner
Meitner also discovered nuclear fission, although the Nobel Prize was awarded to Hahn, who was also on the team. She was a lifetime partner with Hahn and explained nuclear fission when an experiment had split the nucleus in half. She was born in Vienna, Austria. -
Otto Hahn
Hahn discovered nuclear fission and worked in nucler chemistry. He also worked to improve radiochemistry and radiactivity, allowing the future generations to develop atom bombs. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany. -
Albert Einstein
Einstein was able to prove that atoms existed by using a microscope. He created the theory of relativity, leading to advancements in atomic energy studies and his advanement in Planck's theories. He was born in Ulm, Germany. -
Niels Bohr
Bohr studied Rutherford's discoveries and created new pictures of the atom. He discovered that electrons orbit the nucleus of the atom at different levels, with the farther away having the most energy. He was born Copenhagen, Denmark. -
Erwin Schrödinger
He formed a new atomic theory, discovering that electrons can transmit energy in wavelengths when they travel from energy levels in the atom. He was born in Vienna, Austria. -
James Chadwick
Chadwick discovered the neutron when he was studying under Rutherford. He mainly studied the atom's nucleus and did experiments with wax and polinium to discover the neutron. He was born in Bollington, in the United Kingdom. -
Louis de Broglie
He developed the wave mechanics theory and improved Bohr's atomic model. de Broglie also discovered that electrons can move in waves depending on energy, wavelength, and frequency. He was born in Dieppe, France. -
Plum Pudding Atomic Model
This model was proposed by JJ Thomson, saying that positive and negative charges were distributed throughout the atom. This expalained the balance in electrons and protons. -
Planetary Model
Rutherford realized that the electrons orbit the nucleus so that the closer they are, the less energy they have. He also started to determine that there is a specific number of electrons in each level in order to make it a stable atom. He realized that the electrons orbit the nucleus like in space. -
Glenn T. Seaborg
Seaborg found hundreds of isotopes and was a part of the Atomic Energy Commision. He also used these isotopes to identify over 7 new elements. He was born in Ishpeming, Michagan, in the United States. -
Quantum Mechanical Model of the Atom
In this model, created by Bhor's observations, is used mainly in math to determine and name the energy shells of the elctron cloud in the atom. This model combined various other ideas on atomic theory in order to create more precise example. -
Electron Cloud Model
This model was created by Erwin Schrodinger and Werner Heisnenberg. It elaborated on Bohr's ideas that the electrons orbited around the nucleus. The elctron cloud is self explanatory and is where the electrons are in the atom. -
Aristotle
He was a philosopher who studied many sciences and used inductive/deductive reasoning. He didn't belive in the atomic theory and instead thought the world was made of the four elements of matter. He was born in Stagira, Greece.
