Harvard's football team had introduced the world to the first known athletic trainer, James Robinson. Robinson was hired because the coach or assistant coach would have to provide assistance to the players, as well he was hired to help the team with their fitness levels, and although he had no real knowledge or training of just what he was doing, he provided the team with stretches and massages.

The National Athletic Training Association was founded in the year or 1950 in the state of Missouri. The NATA was created for the foundation to be laid out for anyone who wished to become an athletic trainer as they must meet the set out criteria that is displayed by the NATA.

The American Medical Association had officially declared athletic training as an allied health profession.

The NATA Education Council was developed, they were who determined the criteria that should be taught in the athletic training programs.

In 2004, the rules had changed as previously individuals were able to be certified after they had completed an internship of sort. Now in order for one to be certified, one must have graduated from an accredited athletic training education program and then sit for the exam to be taken.

Athletic Trainers are now recognized as multi-skilled healthcare professionals who provide a variety of services such as emergency care, injury prevention, rehabilitation, clinical diagnosis as well as therapeutic intervention.
