Astronauts In Space

  • Welcome to Space

    Welcome to Space
Hi everybody and welcome to space. Here you will find how and when astronauts went into space. I am sure you know who the first person is, but I think other astronauts will be unknown to you. By reading this timeline, you will become knowledgeable about important people who had the courage to do something amazing like go to space. Have fun!
  • Yuri Gagarin

    Yuri Gagarin
Yuri Gagarin, a Russian Astronaut and Soviet Air Force pilot, was the first person to travel into space. He was 27-years old when he was flying into space. During his flight, he became the first man to orbit the planet Earth in his space capsule in 89 minutes. His capsule completed one orbit around Earth. He was very passionate about flying. He attended technical school and became what he ever dreamt of. Gagarin was killed (along with another pilot) while they were driving.
  • Alan Shepard

    Alan Shepard
Admiral Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr. was the first American in space. He was the second person in space. He was a test pilot, naval aviator, and businessman. He went to Naval War College to become an astronaut. He was one of the original seven Mercury program astronauts. “With shock he made a 15-minute flight that reached an altitude of 115 miles.” He traveled 300 miles. Their splashdown was watched on live television by millions of people. He was the only person to play golf on the Moon.
  • Gus Grissom

    Gus Grissom
He was also one of the Project Gemini and Apollo program astronauts. His father got 24 dollars every week, so he wasn’t rich or poor. He went to the United States Air Force in order to become an astronaut. He took an interest in aviation and flying planes when he started earning his money. He became friends with a local lawyer who owned a light aircraft at the Belford Airport. As the days went by, he started learning the basics of flying and aeronautical engineering. He flew in space twice.
  • John Glenn

    John Glenn
John Herschel Glenn Jr. was a United States Marine Corps aviator, engineer, astronaut, businessman, and politician. He was the back-up pilot for Alan Shepard. He was the first American to orbit the Earth, circling it three times. He went to Muskingum University in order to become an astronaut. He was one of the Mercury Seven, military test pilots. He orbited the globe more than 100 times. He flew 149 military combat missions. He was the oldest person to go to space.
  • Michael Collins

    Michael Collins
Michael Collins was born in Rome, Italy on October 31,1930. He went to the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York in order to become an astronaut. NASA chose Collins to be part of astronauts Group 3 for Apollo 11 and Gemini 10 missions. His second mission was with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. In Gemini 10, he only did a spacewalk and in Apollo 11 was the first lunar landing in history. He received the “Presidential Medal of Freedom” and works as an aerospace consultant.
  • Neil Armstrong

    Neil Armstrong
He was a naval aviator, test pilot and a university professor. Neil Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon. He became a pilot at the age of 16 and began his studies in aeronautical engineering at Purdue University on a U.S. Navy scholarship in 1947. In 1951, he flew 78 combat missions in the Korean War. He joined NASA after he served in the Korean War and in 1962. He went on 2 space missions which were Gemini 8 and Apollo 11. Six million people watched him do his moonwalk.
  • Buzz Aldrin

    Buzz Aldrin
Buzz Aldrin is an American engineer, a former astronaut and fighter pilot. He flew in the Korean War just like Neil Armstrong. In 1947, he graduated from Montclair High School in Montclair, New Jersey, and joined the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in order to go to space. He joined the 51st Fighter Wing and flew F-86 Sabre jets in 66 combat missions in Korean War. His missions were Apollo 11 and Gemini 12 and he did a five-hour spacewalk. Aldrin received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
  • Sally Ride

    Sally Ride
Sally Kristen Ride was an American astronaut and physicist. She became the first American woman in space. She went to Westlake High School in Los Angeles, and received lots of degrees from Stanford University in order to become an astronaut. She beat 1000 other applications for the spot in NASA astronaut program. She helped station satellites and worked on other projects. She was the youngest American astronaut who traveled around Earth. When she was 32 years old, she went to the moon.

He did mechanical engineering from Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He postgraduate research at the University of Waterloo in Ontario in 1982 and went to the University of Tennessee. He flew two space shuttle missions and was a commander of the International Space Station. He has flown over 70 different types of aircrafts.

    Visit Again To Space
The astronauts that I have included are nowhere close to the number of people who went into space. These people were chosen just to give you guys an idea of the top astronauts and a little bit about them. This was a fun assignment because I had to make a timeline in chronological order, so that it made sense. I hope you enjoyed this timeline about astronauts in space as much as I did.
