    Samuel de Champlain succeeded in settling New France when in 1608, he brought people over to the valley of the St.Lawrence
  • Filles du roi

    Les filles du roi were a group of 800 french women who were sent to Canada to accompany the men between 1663 and 1673. This helped create families and increase the population.
  • The battle of the plains of Abraham

    During the seven years war the french and the British fought in the battle of the plains of Abraham. The French lost and ended up losing control to the British.
  • United empire Loyalists

    After the American revolution, many people who wanted to come to the new British land came and settled in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, St, John and Quebec.
  • African American refuges

    During the course of the war of 1812, many African american slaves were able to escape from Georgia and Virginia on British ships and got to safety in Nova Scotia
  • Potato Famine

    During the Potato famine, many Europeans came to Canada to avoid poverty and famine. under 1 million Irish and Scots came for a new beginning
  • Underground Railway

    Led by Harriet Tubman, the underground railway is an organization that helps slaves escape to Canada as Slavery was made illegal. This Group never failed to bring anyone to safety
  • Canadian Pacific Railroad

    The government had a plan to build a railroad that spanned across the country. To build it, Many Chinese workers were hired to come to Canada and build the railway
  • Chinese Head Tax

    Following the construction of the railway Canada was being overwhelmed by Chinese immigration so to try and solve that, they created the head tax for all Chinese immigrants that involved a fee.
  • European immigration

    Many promotional posters were made in part of a campaign to promote free land in hopes of Bringing immigrants from Russia, Poland, Ukraine, etc
  • WW1

    The dangers in traveling during the first world war cause a major drop in immigration to Canada and the immigrant levels never reached the same level.
