    My first language was spanish. When I was a toddler, my mom would read books in spanish to me.

    I was an English Language Learner when I started grade school. I remember being pulled out of class to take exams because I was an ELL. I had a careless attitude for reading because it just seemed too hard to read in english.

    I was reading one or two reading grade levels below my reading level. I disliked reading because it became something I had to do rather than wanted to do. My teacher during this time made it seem like a chore so I did not bother to like it.
  • Catching Up

    I started reading at my level by the time I reached the end of second grade because my teacher would make reading fun and we would have fun activities based off of books we read. She helped me one-on-one with my reading and encouraged me to practice at home.
  • AR Readers

    We had the accelerated readers program where we would read books then take quizzes and earn points based on how well we did on the quizzes. I began to feel more engaged because I liked quizzes. My teachers made it seem fun.

    I became motivated by my teachers to accumulate as much points to win a prize so I would read intensively. It became fun for me and I realized that I liked learning from reading. I received awards and prizes for all the points I accumulated.

    In middle school I was in book club because I really loved reading. I would read large chapter books within the adventure/fantasy genre. My teachers would praise me for reading large books when they would see me holding them in the halls and setting them down in class.
  • High School

    In high school, we read more informative text and I found it to be boring so I began to disengage from reading because I did not find it to be interesting compared to the type of genres I usually enjoyed. My teachers would focus on learning how to annotate informative text, cite sources, and write papers to analyze readings.
  • Too Much Reading

    In my last years of high school, I did not read books on my own time because I felt that I was forced to read too much that was not interesting so I stayed away from reading books when I did not need to. However, I would read news articles on my phone. I gained a lazy attitude towards reading.
  • College

    College
    Now I am a good reader because of how much I practiced it and enjoyed it when I was a young girl. It is because of my second, fourth, and fifth grade teachers that I would read so much and enjoy learning through reading. Now, I read for my education and when I have the spare time, I pick out books I can learn things from and read them for my enjoyment.
