Compromise 1850
became a law in Spetmember of that year. It accomplished what clay had wanted ;which was his five main parts. He urged Congress to let California enter the Union as a free state. He called the rest of the Mexican Cession to be organized as a federal territory. In this territory already called New Mexico popular sovereingty would decide the status of slavery. He addressed a border dispute between Texas and New Mexico. -
Fugitive slave act
Reinforced "by law" the right to seize and return to bondage slaves who had fled to free territory. -

Kansas/ Nebraska Act
The Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska and opened new lands for settlement, and allowed the settlers to decide (popular sovereignty) whether or not to have slavery -
John Browns Raid
John Brown led a group of 21 men (16 white and 5 black) across the Potomac River from Maryland to Virginia. Their immediate objective was the capture of the cache of weapons stored at the U.S. Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Brown's ultimate goal was to destroy the slave system of the South. -
