Medieval
Medieval art was mostly based on religious art or Christian art as most of these paintings either reflected religion or were hung/placed in churches to be viewed. Art was never focusing on a single individual as there was no self portraits during that time. Most of the paintings would show Jerusalem, Jesus, or a fight of some sort(usually based off of or portraying the crusades). Famous artists include Donatello and Lorenzo Ghiberti. Famous works include Adoration of the Magi and The Maesta. -

Renaissance
Renaissance art was different from the art of the Medieval time period. The art in the Renaissance focused more on emotions and depicted more public places. The art was now less Church based for the Church's power during the Renaissance was slowly decreasing. Famous painters include Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Some famous paintings include The Last Supper, Mona Lisa, and The Birth of Venus. -

Baroque
Baroque art reflected much of the religious tensions in that era. The Church in Rome was in a quest to put themselves back at the top in the coming of the Protestant Reformation. Many of the art as a result was huge paintings on walls or gigantic murals that would be displayed in the Churches. Some major paintings include The Triumph of the Name of Jesus and Daniel in the Lions Den. Some major artists of the era include Velázquez and Caravaggio. -

Artists/art in the Rococo period tried to use nature to refer to the God/gods in a more lighthearted and playful way then previous art movements who referred to religion in a darker way. The artists would use lighter colors and would try to show the harmony between humans and nature. Some famous artists from the Rococo period include Antoine Watteau and Jean-Baptiste van Loo. Some famous works from the Rococo period include Pierrot and The Triumph of Galatea. -

Neoclassicism
Neoclassicism art had brought back styles of classic art from the classical period. Works during this era were inspired by Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. The art period focused more on the simplicity and symmetry of things. Most of this art had reflected the Enlightenment and ideas around it. The works of this time period include The Death of Marat and The Death of Socrates. Some of the famous artists of this era include Jacques-Louis David and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. -

The Romanticism art era followed old medieval techniques and styles. This art was meant to show emotion, nature, individualism, and aesthetic. The Realism art era was when artists portrayed the typical day and life of a normal person in a normal place. That also meant depicting the unpleasant aspects of life. Impressionism art tried to change past art completely and went to a more exact type of paintings and artists put less details into their works. Their was several painting styles and the artists would usually try to emphasize the light and color. They would use bright colors in most of their works. Expressionism art was purposed so that it would evoke emotions of the onlooker. The pieces would create a dramatic emotion effect. The artists would tend to express emotion of current events or personal experiences or even the reality of the world. Expressionism reflected positivism and Impressionism.
