    Fra Angelico painted the San Marco Altar piece between 1438 and 1443. He was an Italian Renaissance painter of the early 14th century. The painting depicts the virgin and child on a throne surrounded by angels and saints. The painting is renowned for its religious theme, political message, and perspective.
    Fra Angelico was a well respected painter and was mentioned in Vasaris "Lives of the Artists." He was born in Florence but, died in Rome. He was famous for painting frescos.

    Johannes Gutenberg invents printing press 1440
    Johannes Gutenberg invents the printing press around 1440. This was a monumental achievement as it served to shape the 15th century. It helped spread ideas and invented what we now call the "press" or more commonly known as the media. That led to many different ideas between those in a position of power and those who were not. It led to the Reformation and threatened those in politics or leadership positions, as people became more literate and questioned their authority.

    Donato di Niccolò di Betto Bard or more commonly known as Donatello was a Renaissance sculptor in Florence Italy. He was a master of his trade and could develop master sculptures from various materials such as stone, wood, bronze, stucco, and wax. Donatello was a formally trained artist who received his education from Lorenzo Ghiberti as he worked with him in his art studio. Donatello is well know for his massive sculptures and his most well known art is of Saint John the Evangelist.

    Veit Stoss carved the largest Gothic altarpiece during the Northern Renaissance. It is located in St. Mary's Basilica in Krakow, Poland. It is considered a national treasure. It is believed to have been carved between the years 1477-1484. He is also considered a late style Gothic Baroque artist by many leading experts. He was born around 1450 in Horb am Neckar and died in Nuremberg around 1533.

    Italian Wars 1494-1559
    The Great Italian Wars were also known as the Renaissance wars where several different conflicts between the Papal States, Republic of Venice, and other prominent western European states such as France, Spain, Holy Roman Empire, England, and Scotland were fought. It was a battle for dominance and territory, with many alliances and enemies made in those regions. The aftermath of those great wars helped shape Italy and bestow a greater importance in the art community as a whole.

    Catharina van Hemessen was a Flemish Renaissance artist. She is one of the very first noted female painters of the Northern Renaissance. Hemessen is known for her series of small portraiture paintings. She is also credited with being the very first recorded artist to complete a self-portrait. Many artist throughout the coming decades will follow in her footsteps and also create their very own self portraits. She was considered a rarity as there were not many female artist in that time

  • The Boar Hunt 1653

    The Boar Hunt 1653
    Frans Snyders painted this scene in the new Baroque style of Northern Europe. Snyders was a Flemish painter of still life, hunting scenes, and market scenes. He was born in Antwerp and collaborated with other great artist such as Peter Paul Rubens, and Anthony van Dyck. He specialized in animaliers scenes such as the wild boar hunt painting pictured. He would usually paint the subjects as if they were engaged in battle with dark colors and exaggerated motions.

    The Treaty of the Pyrenees was signed on November 7th, 1659 and it ended the 1635-1659 war between France and Spain. This treated had broader consequences as the war between France and Spain was intertwined with the Thirty Years' War. Peace affected various artist as Luxembourg became the territory of France. Painters like Nicolas Poussin had more leverage and sway over what art should be created and considered high art.

    Claude Lorrain was a French painter and engraver of the Baroque era. He was famous for painting landscapes and historical art such as, Landscape with Ascanius Shooting the Stag of Sylvia (1682), Lorrain's last known and recorded painting. He worked and spent most of his adult life in Italy. He was also known by the name Claude Gellée. He died at an unusually old age, at the time, in 1682 at or around the age of eighty-two.

    Louis XIV who was the King of France from 1643 until he died in 1715. He is considered the longest ruler of any European country with seventy-two years in power. His long reign made him one of the most powerful monarchs of his era. He had major influences over his subjects including artist of that region. He was the acting ruler during Thirty Years' War. His war like persona shaped history in favor of the French and their artist inhabitants. His death meant uncertainty for the region

    Henry Benbridge 1743-1812
    Henry Benbridge born October 1743 died February 1812, was an early American portrait painter who was born in Philadelphia. He is pictured seating down on the left in the featured painting. He suffered from asthma and moved to Charleston, South Carolina. He then proceeded to become one of the most celebrated portraiture painters of the time and region.

    Gavin Hamilton was a neoclassical history painter. He mainly painted Greek or Roman classical subjects. The Venus painting is a good example of his painting in Neoclassical style as the colors are of the lighter palate and there is a prominent grace in his brush strokes.

    Napoleon Bonaparte becomes the first Emperor of the French 1804
    Napoleon Bonaparte becomes the first Emperor of the French 1804 until 1814 an then again in 1815. He built a large and vast empire which he ruled under a dictatorship disguised as a republic government entity. He ruled over the majority of continental Europe before its final collapse. His victories sparked a huge interest in painting his image, such as Napoleon Crossing the Alps which is an amazing painting by Jacques-Louis David.

    Sarah Miriam Peale (1800-1885) was a famous American portrait painter from Philadelphia. She was also known for her still-life paintings until she evolved her skills into the art of portraiture. She is a celebrated artist with notable art work designed for Marie-Joseph Paul Yves Roch Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, who is known as Lafayette, a French military leader . The featured painting is a self-portrait painted in 1818.

    Illarion Mikhailovich Pryanishnikov was a realism painter who created Episode of the war of 1812 in (1874). He was trained in Moscow's School of Painting and he generally painted historical events such as the one denoted in the featured painting. Note the realistic environment and attention to detail in the scene. It also has a tinge of Romanticism.

    Houses in Munich, 1908 was painted by Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky who was and active painter during the mid 1900's. He is credited as being one of the first painters to produce a purely abstract painting. He is also regarded as n Expressionist artist. You can see in (Houses in Munich) where he tries to break away from the visual references of the landscape and interject his own visual interpretation of his subject.

    Charles Henry Buckius Demuth (November 8, 1883 – October 23, 1935) Was an American painter who specialized in water colors for the majority of his career. Later in life he turned to oil painting and developed a styled called Precisionism. He was also influenced by Pablo Picasso as some of his paintings have a cubinistic design to it. His most famous painting is, I Saw the Figure 5 in Gold 1928, which is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City.

    The Balkan Campaign of World War II began with the Italian invasion of Greece on 28 October 1940. By the June 1st, 1941, all of Albania, Yugoslavia and Greece were under Axis control. These wars caused some notable artist to leave Germany and immigrate to other nations such as France and the United States. This movement of artist caused a shift in the art world that would later come to fruition in New York, as different sets of artist moved to safer locations.
