Impressionism
An art movement which began in the 1860s, impressionism was the opposite of what art had been before. Instead of artists aiming to create a realistic painting, they tried to capture details such as the lighting, landscape. In other words, they wanted to create an "impression" of the scene rather than an exact picture of it, hence the name. It was popular among Parisian artists. -
Post-Impressionism
An art movement which started from 1886-1905, post-impressionism was an art movement created as the opposite of impressionism. Post-impressionists aimed to create a more abstract version of impressionism, focusing on the pattern of brushstrokes. Famous post-impressionists include Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Rousseau. -
Art Nouveau
Art nouveau artists were often inspired by nature and wildlife, plants and greenery. Art nouveau was well known for asymmetrical designs, and motifs, often made onto mosaics. The goal was to create "flowing lines" and a natural feel to the artwork. This art form was popular up to the era of the first world war. -
Fauvism
Fauvism was a bright, colorful and bold style of art which started in the early 1900s. Fauve artists directly applied paint to the canvas rather than using a brush in order to create bold colors and a lasting impression on viewers. The colors used were bright and often clashed to create an almost chaotic sense. -
Expressionism
Expressionism was a unique art form. Artists paid no attention to objective reality, but rather painted scenes from a subjective view in an effort to convey emotion and ideas or thoughts. -
Cubism
Cubism was invented by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. The style encouraged artists to capture a scene from every angle and perspective. Cubism includes many geometrical designs and shapes, mimicking the appliance of people or objects. -
Surrealism
As the name suggests, surrealism art has many surreal and fantastical properties. This style blends reality with one's ideal world. Surrealism pieces are often very bizarre with odd creatures and settings. -
Futurism
An art form which took place in Italy, a group of artists of artists called "futurists" decided to take their ideas of a future Italy and show it to the world through art. The artworks are dynamic and focus on showcasing futuristic ideas, political movement, new technology and energy and creativity. -
