1976 Election
Carter won the election against Gerald Ford in 1976, making him the 39th president of the United States. They both worked to develop a smooth transition in between administrations. -
Carter pardons all drafter evaders
President Carter issued a pardon for many violations of the MSSA. Carter pardons all draft evaders - He pardoned the drafter evaders for some of those people may not have committed violent acts, which shows he is releasing the innocents. He also did this as a sign of putting the war and bitter decisions because of the war in the past. -
The Economy and Energy
Through this, he was able to conserve energy by calling all Americans to conserve their energy, and pushed for increased use of renewable energy. This helped save money and the environment because less oil and other chemicals are being used. This also helped the US to become more independent and not dependent on oil, and it also helped improve the automotive mileage standards, which made vehicles to become more fuel-efficient. -
Panama Canal Treaty
This agreement was American giving up their control over their canal by the year 2000 to guarantee its neutrality tiy. This helped build relations between the US and Panama and shows their good faith in giving back the land back to its owner. -
Camp David Accords
The Camp David accords was signed by president Carter, Sadat, and Begin in September 1978, creating a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. This ensured both Egypt and Israel in being able to to achieve their goals where Egypt will regain the Sinai Peninsula and Israel will receive its first formal recognition from an Arab state. This helps with foreign relations and ends the conflict between the tension of both countries and brought peace between both of them. -
MX Missile Approved
It was an essential step on developing anew and survivable missile for the future. This was to create a stronger defense for the US under the new strategic arms accord. This decision also declared that it would help gain the chance for Senate's approval for the arms pact. -
Dept. of Education Established
Dept. of education established - This improved and promoted student achievement and preparation for global struggles and competition. It also established a policy and enforced federal educational laws that regarded privacy and civil rights. This would help improve the country's future. -
Environmental wins
President Carter signed the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA). To avoid plundering, Carter thought that conserving fuel was the key. With this act, it protected over 100 million acres of land and doubled the size of the nation's park and wildlife refuge system. -
Hostages Get Released
Hostages were sent home on January 20-21 in 1981. The 52 American Hostages, seized from the U.S. embassy in Tehran in November 1979. The hostages were formally released into United States custody the day after signing the Algiers Accords, just minutes after American President Ronald Reagan was elected.
