    Archduke assassinated
    The assassination of the Archduke is what caused World War One to start. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian. Ferdinand was killed during a parade, he was shot to death. He was killed next to his wife who was also killed. They were killed in Sarajevo, Bosnia. This started the war because allies jumped into to help their sides. It started between Austria and Chaz Valcea.

  • the cotton balers

    the cotton balers
    His regiment was awarded for their notable action at the battle of New Orleans. They got their nickname “the cotton balers”. They would pack the bales with mud. That way they wouldn’t catch on fire when the english would fire their cannons. The mud would keep it from catching fire.

    Germans fired  150 tons of chlorine gas against french divisions.
    It was the first day to use gas of this kind. It is an important event because it was a way that amped up the ways to cause more violence and hurt and kill more soldiers. The chemical gases uses were up majorly. It was a way to harm the other side quickly without being close to them. They would load small gas canisters into shells and shoot them. 5631 men died do to the use of gas during WWI. This was the most efficient way to kill people during WWI.

    A German submarine sinks the passenger liner Lusitania. The ship carries 1,198 people, 128 of them Americans. It was torpedoed by a german submarine because it was carrying goods for britain from the US. (even though the US was supposed to be neutral). It was carrying equipment such as ammo and guns. That is why it took fifteen minutes to sink. It wouldn’t have if it didn’t have the things that helped it catch fire.

    The tanks were the next big invention used to help with the attacks. They were invented to counter the attacks of the German submarines. Tanks would later be a big weapon used in World War Two. They were thought to be an equal weapon maybe even better. The tanks were a big part of the war but it was thought that the tanks would be a big and better invention.     Zimmerman Telegram
    The telegram was from the German to Mexico.It is called the Zimmerman telegram because it was named after Arthur Zimmerman.The telegram was intercepted by British intelligence in January 1917.Count Johann von Bernstorff was told to offer Mexico financial aid if they would be an ally to Germany during US and German conflicts. If Germany won they would restore the land lost to Texas.

    Wilson for war
    President Wilson went to congress to send the U.S. into war. To battle Germany in World War One. Four days later congress obliged and declared war on Germany. The public wanted Wilson to make the congress to make the United States abandon it being neutral.So the world could be safe for democracy. Wilson lead the largest war-mobilization at the time.

    Selective service Act
    About six weeks after the U.S. officially entered World War One the Selective Service Act was passed. It gave the president the power of draft soldiers. It was to help the allies who men were exhausted on the western front. This was desperately needed. The U.S. wasn’t able to provide men right away. We only had a small number of army volunteers. 100,000 men that were not trained or equipped for any type of fighting they would see in Europe.

    Glenden registers and gets drafted
    Glenden registered for WWI,he wanted to board #53 South Bend on June 5,1917. He was drafted on December 11,1917. He went into a training camp in Augusta,GA. He was assigned to 28th infantry division. When he arrived to the camp he was assigned to the 7th regiment.

    Bolshevik, Russia, signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk with central powers. Abandoning the Allied war effort which granted independence to its polish, Baltic territories. In December 1917 Germany agreed to armistice and peace talks with Russia. The talks stopped after German wanted independence for Russian holdings.

     Battle of Chateau- Thierry
    Germany offensive took charge and penetrated the western front. They were under control of General John J. The U.S. wanted to stop Germany so they attacked four German divisions. They were the under control of James Harbord. More than 1,000 people died in this battle.
  • Glenden leaves the 7th

    Glenden leaves the 7th
    The 7th regiment infantry fought in chateau-thierry. He fought with the 7th from Belleau wood,to chateau-thierry,and to the second battle of Marne. He got gassed on his 23rd birthday for the first time. He was gassed with mustard gas. Which left blister in and on his throat,nasal cavity skin,and lungs. July 22,1918 was his last day with the 7th.

    St. Michiel.
    On September 28, 1918, Glenden was re-assigned to the L of the of the 353rd infantry. It was part of 177th regiment. This unit went to St. Michiel. Which was along the Meuse river. So they could enter the Argonne Forest Sector.

    On october 23 1918, Glenden was injured while in the Arogonne Forest Sector. He got gassed once again. He also had shrapnel wounds from alterilry shells . he was in the hospital when the war eneded.
  • Treaty of Versailles is signed ending the war

    Treaty of Versailles is signed ending the war
    World war I officially ended when the treaty of versailles was signed. The Treaty was signed in June. The allied powers were the only ones there. Germany had no participation in this. Germany had to pay the money from the war damages and wasn’t aloud to build their army up. This was all broken down when Hitler became in control of Germany later on.
