1948 War
Description- Israel declared independence. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq attacked Israel. Outcome- Israel gained land. Egypt gained the Gaza Strip and Jordan gained the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Jews became refugees. -
Six Day War
Description- Egypt blockaded Israel. Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq moved troops to Israel's borders and made threatening statements. Israel launched a preemptive strike. Outcome- Israel captured the West bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza Strip and all the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt, More Palestinians and Jews became refugees. Terrorism became more common. -
Settlement Construction Begins
Description- It was when the Israeli government approved building settlements on the West Bank. Outcome- There are over 300,000 West Bank settlers. Some people think that the land should be used for the future. -
Attrition Battles
Description- The Attrition battles were when the Arab nations were not willing to make peace with Israel because they thought that Israel belonged to them. Outcome- Jordan succeeded in evicting the PLO from the country. -
The October War or Yom Kippur War
Description- Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur. Israel also gained Buffer Zones. Outcome- Israel retained their territories captured in 1967 without the additional land. -
Egypt and Israel Sign a Peace Agreement
Description- Egypts economy and people were not safe so they made a peace treaty. Outcome- Israel returned all of the Sinai that had been captured. They also removed all of the Jewish families from their homes. -
The 1982 Lebanon War
Description- PLO started attacking Northern Israel, so Israel started attacking PLO's largest military base. Outcome- PLO leadership from Lebanon went to Tunisia. Israel also had Military presence in Southern Lebanon. -
The First Intifada
Description- Palestinians from the West Bank created an uprising against Israeli control. Outcome- Many Palestinians died from the Military and people who created the Uprising. -
The Oslo Accords
Description- It was an agreement which led to the creation of the Palestinian Authority. Israel and Palestine had to fulfill some tasks in order to keep some peace. Outcome- They tried to make peace with each other, however they accused each other of not fulfilling each part of the Agreement. -
Israel and Jordan Sign a Peace Treaty
Description- The U.S designed a process that would help Jordan and Israel gain peace. Outcome- Jordan recognized Israel as a country. Trade, business, relations, tourism, culture, and Scientific loop increased. -
The Camp David Summit
Description- President Clinton made the Israeli President and the Palestinian President to negotiate an agreement to keep peace. Outcome- The 2 countries refused ans peace was not achieved. -
The Second Intifada
Description: Ariel Sharon visited a Jewish temple, Palestinians called him "provocative" and rioted.
Outcome: Many people on both sides (Israel and Palestine) died, people lived in misery, and many terrorist attacks occurred. -
Israel Begins Constructing the West Bank Barrier
Description: Israel built a wall that would prevent terrorist attacks but caused Palestinians trouble.
Outcome: Suicide bombings decreased but it blocked Palestinians from getting to work. -
Arab Peace Initiative is Proposed
Description: The Arab League set out a proposal that would make Israel withdraw from all of the territories captured in the 1967 War. Also, Palestine is recognized as a state.
Outcome: Israel declines some parts of the bill, such as withdrawing the pre-1967 borders. However, they did accept some parts of the bill. -
The Road Map for Peace is Proposed
Description: The plan for peace that wanted Palestine to be an independent state.
Outcome: A terrorist organization called Hamas wanted to destroy Israel. There was no progress on the Road Map. -
Israel Disengages from Gaza
Description: Israel withdrew themselves from the Gaza strip allowing Palestinians to govern themselves.
Outcome: The number of rockets fired by terrorists from Gaza increased. -
Hamas is Elected
Description: People voted for many Hamas members because they thought the officials were corrupt.
Outcome: Western nations imposed sanctions and suspended aid to the Palestinian authority. -
The 2006 Lebanon War
Description: Hezbollah attack of Israeli army unit. They launched rockets into Israeli cities. Israel launched air strikes back at Hezbollah.
Outcome: The loss of civilian lives due to Hezbollah using human shields, and property damage. Israel damaged Lebanon's transportation system. -
The Battle of Gaza
Description: Hamas militants attacked Fatah members in Gaza. The Palestinian authority president dissolved the Hamas government.
Outcome: Today, there is two Palestinian governments: Hamas controls Gaza and Palestinian Authority controls West Bank. -
Gaza War
Description: Israel attacked Hamas targets in Gaza to stop rocket attacks on Israel, also to disrupt terrorists and weapon smuggling.
Outcome: Hundreds of militants were killed. Gaza's buildings and economy were heavily damaged. -
Gaza Flotilla Incident
Description: Israel and Egypt began a blockade of Gaza. Six ships sailed to break the blockade. Israeli commandos were attacked on one ship.
Outcome: Ships were docked for inspection and Turkey demanded an apology from Israel, nine Turkish activists died. -
Arab Spring
Description: The Arab Spring started in Tunisia, Arabs rebelled against autocratic and oppressive governments government because they decided they wanted democracy.
Outcome: The Tunisian President left in 2011, along with the Egyptian President. The impact of the Arab Spring has not been determined yet.
