    Palestinians used more violent tactics than in 1st with less emphasis on non-cooperation and passive resistance. Youths now used automatic weapons, not just rocks. Increased use of suicide bombings to attack Israeli civilians. 21st century heralded a new period of intense conflict in the ME. By the end of 2000, a bloody cycle of violence and counter-violence racked both occupied territories and Israel. Ariel Shannon elected PM (hardliner) and refused to negotiate with Yasser Arafat.   • 1st Intifada

    Palestinians challenged Israeli control of occupied territories. Took the form of mass protests, general strikes, boycotts and civil disobedience. Palestinian youths (not PLO) attacked Israeli soldiers with rocks and Israeli military fired on them causing international outcry.
  • Oslo Peace Initiative

    Agreed that Palestinians would recognise Israeli's right to exist and Israeli agreed to a phased withdrawal​ from the occupied territories
