1948 War
Brief Description: Israel declared independence. Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq attacked Israel.
Outcome: Israel gained land. Egypt gained the Gaza Strip and Jordan gained the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Hundred of thousands of Palestinians and Jews became refugees. -
Six Day War or The 1967 War
Bried Description: Egypt blockaded Israel. Egypt, Jordan, Syria and Iraq moved troops to Israel's borders and made threatening statements. Israel launched a preemptive strike. Outcome; Israel captured the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the Gaza Strip and all of the Sinai Peninsula from Egypt. More Palestinians and Jews became refugees. Terrorism became more common. -
Settlement Construction Begins
Brief Description: Israeli government approved the building of many settlements that were supposed to serve as security posts. Outcome: People have criticized these settlements as they think it is for future Palestine settlements. Israel and Palestinian Authority negotiate for the land as a peace agreement. -
Attrition Battles
Brief Description: Israel dominated the middle east and stated it as willing to give back land in exchange for peace. Arab Nations met and declared unwillingness to peace. Outcome: The fighting continued until June of 1971 when Jordan succeeded in evicting the PLO from their country. The PLO moved the Lebanon. -
The October War or Yom Kippur War
Brief Description: Egypt and Syria attacked Israel on Yom Kippur and lost some of its land to the Arab attackers. Outcome: After the war, Israel retained the territories captured, but did not keep additional land. -
Egypt and Israel Sign a Peace Agreement
Brief Description: Egypt became the first Arab country to recognize Israel and enter a peace treaty with it. Outcome: Israel returned to Egypt all the Sinai they had captured during a war and removed Jewish families from the homess they has established there. -
The 1982 Lebanon War
Brief Description: PLO units in southern Lebanon attacked Israel communities in the north. Israel fought back and invaded Lebanon. Outcome: The costly struggle drew Israel into the Lebanese civil war and generated domestic and international opposition to it sinvolvment in Lebanon. -
The First Intifada
Brief Description: Palestinians began an uprising against Israel control of West Bank and Gaza Strip. Outcome: The Israeli army was not prepared for the attacks and many lives of both Palestinians and Israeli were lost. -
The Oslo Accords
Brief Description: A set of agreements created when Israel and the PLO signed a declaration of principles created by the Palestinian Authority. Outcome: The agreement left Israel the right to defend itself and its citizens but said that Israel should give up land in return for peace and security. Israelis and Palestinians accuse the other of not fulfilling their obligations. -
Israel and Jordan sign a Peace Treaty
Brief Description: The United States assisted Jordan and Israel acheive peace and in 1994, Jordan became the second Arab country to recognize Israel. Outcome: Trade, business, tourism, cultural exchanges, and scientific cooperation between the two have increased since the agreement. -
The Camp David Summit
Brief Description: Bill Clinton brought Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian president Yasser Arafar to Camp David to negotiate a final agreement between Israel and Palestine. Outcome: The goal of the summit, two states living side by side in peace was not achieved after further conflict ensued after accusations were made about the secret meeting. -
The Second Intifada
Brief Description: Israeli General Ariel Sharon visited the Jewish Temple Mount, a site revered by both Jews and Muslims. Many thought of his visit as a rioting act. Outcome: The conflict caused great bloodshed and suffering for both Israeli and Palestinian sides. This failed peace process made for a long condition of misery. -
Arab Peace Initiative is Propsed
Brief Description: Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia proposed a peace initiative endorsed by the Arab league. It propsed that Israel give up all of its territories in exchange for peace. Outcome: Israel welcomes the proposal but does not accept all of its demands, especially giving up their claimed territories. -
Israel Begins Constructing the West Bank Barrier
Brief Description: Israel decided to build a wall that would separate them from terrorists in West Bank. Outcome: The wall has been criticized for dividing some Palestinians from their land. Others argue that the wall can be removed with true peace. -
The Roadmap for Peace is Proposed
Brief Description: A plan for peace that was proposed by the US, Russia, the European Union, and the United Nations to accomplish a secure Israel and independent Palestine. Outcome: The basic principles of the Roadmap were reaffirmed at the Annapolis conference but there has yet to be progress. -
Israel Disengages from Gaza
Brief Description: Prime Minister Ariel Sharon moved ahead to remove Israel from Palestinian territories and the Gaza Strip. Outcome: This act was controversial as the Israeli citizens living there did not want to move. Israel removed themselves and rockets fired by terrorists from Gaza into Israel has increased dramatically. -
Hamas is Elected
Brief Description: Palestinians vote Hamas as their leader over the Fatah party that was previously in power and he orders for the destruction of Israel. Outcome: It did not accept previous Palestinians - Israeli agreements and the group claimed responsibility for their actions. Many Western nations suspended aid to the Palestinian Authority and would be lifted once Hama recognized Israel. -
The 2006 Lebanon War
Brief Description: Hezbollah, an Islamist organization committed to destroying Israel, believed to be heavily supported by Iran and Syria attacked Lebanon as well as Israel. Outcome: Many lives were lost, civilizations destroyed, and rockets fired and Lebanon damaged transportation to prevent Hezbollah from advancing until all ended with a cease fire. -
The Battle of Gaza
Brief Description: Hamas militants attacked Fatah members throughout Gaza. Outcome: The Palestine Authority dissolved Hamas government where today, Hamas controls Gaza and the Palestine Authority controls West Bank. -
The Gaza War
Brief Description: Israel attacked Hamas targets in Gaza to stop rocket attacks on southern Israel and to disrupt terrorism and weapons smuggling. Outcome: Hundred of militants were killed and many of Hamas buildings and economy was destroyed. -
Gaza Flotilla Incident
Brief Description: As Hamas seized control from the Palestinian Authority and Israel and Egypt began a blockade of Gaza and required that all goods to be inspected before entering Gaza to prevent weapon smuggling by Hamas. Outcome: Six ships set sail and docked anyway, despite the blockade. The ships refused to be searched so Israeli commandos boarded but were attacked, resulting in the death of 5 Turks. The relationship between Turkey and Israel has been weakened since the event. -
The Arab Spring
Brief Description: Arab citizens began to protest against the oppresive government in order to create democracy. Outcome: The protests occurred throughout the middle east. The long term impact or peace process in not yet clear.
