The jazz age beginning was the result of the hardships throughout World War One. After the war, the people needed a pick-me-up. They needed cheery music and cheery spirits, which brought along the jazz age as well as famous musicians and artists-just like the Harlem Renaissance. -

The Republican Harding beat Democrat James M. Cox in the Election of 1920. It was an important election to get back at the last democrat president Woodrow Wilson because of World War One and its aftermath. -
Religion- The idea of Modernism began
Because of the changing role of women, the Social Gospel, and new scientific knowledge, a new religion- Modernism- formed. It was interesting because the idea took a historical view of the Bible and they were the people who believed that they believe in evolution and it isn't conflicting with their religion. -
1920's African American Identity- The Harlem Renaissance began
The Harlem Renaissance was important for the African American population because Harlem in New York City was at the time predominantly black and the city soared with new music and poetry from African American idols. It was an age for the books that really allowed black people to finally feel a little accepted in the community that they had been discriminated against for so long. -
1920's Politics- Eugene Debs gets out of prison
Debs was a socialist leader who was sent to prison because he had violated the Espionage Act during World War I. His sentence was commuted by Harding in 1921. -
Immigration- Case of Sacco and Vanzetti started
In 1921, two Italian immigrants-Sacco and Vanzetti- were convicted of murder. Solely just because they were poor, foreign immigrants. They had evidence that they were innocent, but still sentenced to death in years to come. The case was another awakening of what immigrants go through. -

President Harding came up with this to hopefully put an end to excessive government spending and help the economy and their debt. -

Warren increased the tariff rate and made everyone mad. -

The treaty was important because it opened the US' doors to Chinese immigrants. -

Calvin Coolidge was elected president by almost everyone who voted. He was the vice president of Harding until he died. The people loved him, especially because he barely spoke a word. -

Rhapsody in Blue was significant because the composer represent most of the influencers of the time. Russian-Jewish composer, George Gershwin, wrote the piece. Jewish immigrants played a huge role in developing the music of the time. -

This pact was important because it provided an international financial system under the Dawes and Young Plan -
Prohibition- Al Capone organizes his first crime
Just because alcohol was prohibited, that doesn't mean people wouldn't find ways to get alcohol. So, gangs and crime organizers like Al Capone in Chicago, started finding ways to smuggle alcohol and get money from it illegally. So many other Americans had started smuggling and getting involved in crime because of the prohibition. -
Religion- Scopes Trial
In 1925, substitute teacher John Scopes was arrested and tried because he had been accused of teaching evolution in a classroom- which was prohibited at the time. The case was very controversial because it was the first big case that sort of separated religion and education like none before. -

This painting is another that represents the culture of the roaring 20's. The 20's was very much industrial and it was centered around the railroads and industries, which Hopper's painting recreated. -

Authors in the 1920's like Fitzgerald were known as the lost generation. They were post-war, heavy drinking men who were really depressed and sad. They showed their unhappiness with the times in their books. So, 1920's literature was always really sad and underwhelming because that is what the authors were feeling and wanted to express. -

Dreiser was an important author because he inspired the lost generation and other authors/figures of the time by making main characters that succeeded over their obstacles, and did so without any morals. -

Hemingway was part of the generation that had been through world war one and then were now in their twenties or thirties. A lot of the influencers of this time were from the generation, which was what influenced such melancholy literature. Hemingway came up with the term in his books. -

By 1930, feminists were gaining more power and demanding that divorce laws be changed. After a little while, divorce laws were changed and more and more people started getting divorced. -
Dust Bowl- Dust bowl begins
The Dust Bowl starting was very important because the Great Depression was already happening and making families suffer, and the drought was just making life even harder for everyone to find food and survive. -
Herbert Hover's Policies- Debt Moratorium established
Conditions had been so bad worldwide since the Dawes Plan that Hoover decided to talk to Congress about a moratorium that was supposed to pay for the international debt. Some countries agreed to the moratorium, however, it brought the US into more of a decline. -
The Stock Market Crash- Bonus March happened
Military vets marched on the streets to get a $1,000 dollar raise since they couldn't get through the depression and they claimed they needed the money the most. It turned really ugly, however. -

This was an important policy by Hoover to give loans to institutions that were failing. It was supposed to help the economy since the crash of the stock market. -
Prohibition- The Repeal of Prohibition
The repeal ended the prohibition of alcohol so that the manufacturing of alcohol was allowed and hopefully crime would cease. -
New Deal Programs- FDR put in a Bank Holiday
This was a part of FDR's new deal program. He gave the bank a four day holiday that would give the bank enough time to reorganize and people would take a break from withdrawing money. -

The act was a part of FDR's program. It allowed the government to examine the finances of the banks during the four day holiday. -

The act increased the regulations of banks and limited how banks could invest in customers' money. -

FDR made this so that foreclosures were prevented and homes would be refinanced. -

This was important because it provided loans and mortgages to farms to prevent farm foreclosures and keep farmers out of debt. -

The administration was important because it offered grants to state governments and local governments that were giving back to the community during the depression. -

Because of the administration, the administration planned to give money to local/state governments so they would have the funding to build roads, bridges, and other public necessities. -

The corps was really important because it made jobs available to men and made sure these men were employed and had a source of income. -

This was focused on employing Tennessee Valley- a very poor part of the US- men and paying them to build dams and operate electric power plants, etc. They sold electricity to many people for a lot less than electrical companies. It helped get people electricity. -

The program was important because it was to try and guarantee fair wages and fair hours. The program was successful in doing so and changed the industries for the better. -

The program encouraged farmers to reduce production by offering to pay the government for every acre. -

The program was one that focused on creating jobs as well. The agency hired laborers specifically for scheduled construction projects set up by the federal government. -

The newly founded administration would give both the construction and homeowners industry some money by insuring bank loans for building and renovating homes. -
Dust Bowl- The Drought ends
When the drought ended, the depression was still going on. By the time the dust bowl ended, many many people had died and it was good it was over.
