Popular Sovereignty Introduced
Popular Sovereignty was introduced to states to decided if there should be slavery. The decision to have slavery was determined by the people of the territory. This sparked some conflicts among the states. -
Wilmot Proviso
A proposal to prohibit the spread of slavery in any territories aquirred from Mexico. This plan had a lot of support in the House or Representatives but was shot down in the Senate. -
Free Soil Party
The Rejection of the Wilmot Proviso inspired many advocates to create the Free-Soil Party. This party argued against slavery and said it hurt the nation. This was a radical approach compared to most other parties. -
Organizing Land
In the Compromise of 1850 there were major land changes. One was the adding of California as a free state which angered many Southerners as it made teh number of free states mroe than the number of slave states. The Compromise also split up New Mexico and Utah and left the decision on slavery up to popular sorvereignty. -
Fugitive Slave Act
The Fugitive Slave Act was passed as part of the Compromise of 1850. This allowed for slaves to be sent back to the South, This outraged people in the North as this law also made some freeblacks turn into slaves. -
Underground Railroad
During the 1850s the Underground Railroad was a very important means for slaves to escape. It had some difficulties with the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act. The Railroad gained a large amount of support after the Missouri Compromise and Dred Scott Case. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
This act organized land and decided how slavery would be handled. The two territories would be decided on with popular sovergeinty. -
Bleeding Kansas
When deciding on whether or not Kansas would have slavery, political parties flooded the area with people from other states to change the results. This caused fighting between the two parties. -
Dred Scott Case
The Dred Scott Case was a case that an ensalved Black named Dred Scott brought forth to the Supreme Court. He wanted for free blackd to be considered citizens. Lincoln vs. Douglas
Douglas and Lincoln both ran for state Senate. Douglas was for the Democratic Party and Lincoln was a Republican. Douglas was for white supremency whereas Lincoln was for free black oppurtunities.
