The 7 Years War
-A war between the french and many tribes of native americans against the British.
-This war cost Great Britain a significant amount of money
-This was what set the entire chain of events in place -
The Stamp Act
-A tax on printed goods
- Responsible for the creation of the Sons of liberty a group that was responsible for organizing protests against the British acts. -
The Quartering Act
-An act that forced colonists to both house and feed British troops.
-Greatly increased the disdain the colonists had for the British -
The Tea Act
-Taxed on a smaller item to go less noticed but still make money
-Led to the creation of the Boston Tea Party, and then the Sons of Liberty. -
Boston Tea Party
-Dumped tea into Boston harbor
-$1-3 million of tea lost
-Great Britain saw this as a threat
-Led to the creation of the Intolerable Acts -
The Intolerable acts
-The Port Act- a blockade on Boston harbor
-The Mass. Government Act- Restricted all forms of government is the entire state of Massachusetts
-Merchants also refused to join in the boycotts that were being started by the sons of liberty.
-Started to increase the hatred toward the crown, and also led to the calling together of the 1st continental congress. -
1st Continental Congress
-Formed in response to the intolerable acts
-Asked 2 questions: What were the colonists rights?, and how should they defend such rights. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
-"The shot heard 'round the world"
-The British plan of taking munitions from the colonies was not secret any more.
-Served as the final push for the colonists to want to separate from Britain. -
The Olive Branch Petition
-A letter to the king of England apologizing.
-"3 demands"-cease fire in Boston, Asking King George the third to repeal all of the intolerable acts, and also asking him to officially define their colonial rights
-The King saw the olive branch as a joke
- The king laughing at the olive branch was the last straw for the colonists, they were done with the king and wanted to cut all ties to Britain. -
The Declaration of Independence
-Made to tell the king that they're going to become independent.
-This document gave 27 reasons or "grievances" for why they wanted to separate.
-Marked the beginning of the revolutionary war
