Roanoke Island was among the first attempts at colonization of America by Sir Walter Raleigh. Sir Walter Raleigh left and when he returned everyone was gone. -

Jamestown was the first successful colony in what becomes the US, settled in future Virginia, -
Plymouth
Plymouth was the first colony established in Massachusetts by separatists who wanted a religiously pure society. -
Fundamental Orders of Connecticut
The Fundamental Orders of Connecticut was the first written constitution in the colonies. -

English Civil War
The English Civil War between the Parliamentarians and Royalists meant that they couldn't worry about the colonies leading to salutary neglect. -
Trade and Navigation Acts
The Trade and Navigation Acts said that any goods going to the colonies must be by an English ship with English crew and that certain goods could only be sent to England. -
Bacon's Rebellion
Bacon's Rebellion happened when the coastal government didn't send help to the back country when they requested it so Bacon led men to revolt. This led to the coastal government realizing they needed to help the back country and also led to stricter slave laws. -
Beginning of French and Indian War
The French and Indian War begins in the colonies when the French moved onto land claimed by Britain. -
Proclamation Act of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 prohibited settlement west of the Appalachians, this was the first end of salutary neglect. -

Stamp Act
The Stamp Act put a tax on all paper goods in the colonies. These were heavily protested by groups such as the sons of liberty and brought up the issue of taxation without representation. -
Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts put a tax on glass, lead, paint, tea, and paper in order to make money. The colonist react by sending out the Massachusetts circular letter which argued that the acts were unconstitutional. -
Tea Act of 1773
A tax on tea that was collected by the British and heavily protested by the colonists, most notably the Boston Tea Party. -
Intolerable Acts
These were passed to punish Boston for the Boston Tea Party and closed the Boston Port, shut down government in Massachusetts among other things. This got support from other colonies for Boston and the Suffolk resolves were sent out. -
First Continental Congress
First time all colonies come together and they say the Intolerable Acts were unconstitutional and agree to a non importation and non exportation agreement. -
Battle at Lexington and Concord
This was the first military conflict of the American Revolution. The Americans considered it a victory. -
Second Continental Congress
The colonies assembled and talked about there treaties with natives, put Washington in charge of the continental army, and authorized the invasion of Canada. -
Declaration of Independence
This was written by a committee of 5 people and declared the colonies free and independent. -
Battle at Yorktown
Cornwall is trapped between the Continental Army on one side and the French on the other. Official end of war when he surrenders. -
Articles of Confederation
First form of government in America. Gave the federal government almost no power. -
Treaty of Paris
Said that the Colonies were free and set the western boundary at the Mississippi river. -
Shay's Rebellion
This was an armed uprising in Massachusetts. The inability of the federal government to handle it exposed the weakness and showed a new form of government was needed. -
Constitutional Convention
Officially called to revise the Article of Confederation but many came with ideas to create a whole new government. Wrote the new Constitution giving the government more power. -
Washington Elected President
The first president of the US and set many precedents such as a position of neutrality and only serving two terms. -

This was a major religious/philosophical movement that pushed the idea that the common man matters. -

First Party System
The first party system was the Democratic-Republicans and the Federalists. The DR believed the average man could govern and the power of government should be at states while Federalist believed only elites could lead and a strong federal government. -
XYZ Affair
Adams sent people to france for diplomacy but france sent 3 random people to meet them. They were sent there to get a loan but following this the federalists pushed for a war and an undeclared war began. -

This was a period when there were lots of improvements in agriculture, industrialization, Textile, labor relations, and transportation. -
Marbury vs. Madison
Marbury vs. Madison established judicial review and greatly increased the supreme courts power. -
Louisiana Purchase
Originally intended to buy a port but France offered the middle third of the colonies for 15 million so America had to buy. -
War of 1812 begins
This war was between the US and Britian. It began because Britian attacked US ships and didn;t respect the neutrality agreement. -
Hartford Convention
This was a meeting of federalists to make a list of demands but there demands didn't match there beliefs on paper and so the Federalists party ended. -

Clays American System
This was an economic plan that set up a protective tariff, established the second bank of the US and focused on internal improvements. -
Panic of 1819
This was a recession caused by over speculation and led to the land law of 1820 -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri compromise was passed because the balance of slave states and non slave states needed to be even and Missouri threw this off. This led to Maine becoming a state and the 36, 30 line was established. -
Monroe Doctrine
The doctrine said no new European colonization in western hemisphere and any attempts will be viewed as an act of war. -
