7 Years War
-War with the French over land and trade routes.
-Very expensive for British.
-Loans were taken out by the British to fund the war.
-Blamed the colonists for the war.
-Started the taxes, land access, enforcement of laws. -
Sugar Act
-Molasses Act was replaced with the Sugar Act.
-Tax on all sugar products.
-Colonists would use sugar on a day to day basis.
-Lowered taxes from Molasses Act.
-Goal was decrease smuggling among the colonies. -
Stamp Act
-Tax on all paper products/printed goods, including business documents.
-Paid separate from purchase.
-Colonists began to think their rights were being violated.
-Met with heavy colonial resistance. -
Quartering Acts
-Troops began to be stationed in the colonies.
-Business Owners had to occupy and feed British soldiers because they didn't have enough supplies. -
Sons and Daughters of Liberty/Stamp Act Congress
-As they felt their rights were being violated some colonist fought back against the British taxes.
-Began to boycott the goods that were being taxed.
-Non-Importation Agreement
-Tarred Tax Collectors, refused to pay taxes, continued smuggling. -
Townshend Act
-British repealed the stamp acts and replaced them with the Townshend Acts.
-Tax on glass, paint, tea, etc.
-Money was used to finance troops in the colonies.
-Later repealed. -
Boston Massacre
-British soldiers spilled colonist blood in Boston.
-Increased separation between British soldiers and colonists.
-British soldiers won the court case. -
Intolerable Act
-New Acts were set upon the colonist.
-Ended Salutary Neglect.
-Boston Port Bill: Closed the port of Boston until Boston Tea Party was made up for.
-Administration of Justice Act: British officials could not be tried in courts in the colonies.
-Massachusetts Government Act: Gave British officials complete control of colony towns and cities.
-Quebec Act: Extended Canadian borders.
-Colonists began to revolt. -
Declaration of Independence
-The colonists had enough of the British rule.
-Expresses the American Mind.
-Justification of their rights.
-The War then begins.
