    The Watergate Scandal

    Early in the morning of June 17th, 1972, robbers were caught in the offices of the Democratic National Committee in Washington D.C. These robbers had connections to President Nixon's re-election campaign, so naturally he attempted to cover up that the robbers had illegally wire-tapped phone lines and stolen secret documents. This would ultimately fail, and cause the President to resign on August 8th, 1974.

    Gerald Ford's Presidential Term

    Gerald Ford was the 38th President of the United States, and was previously the 40th Vice President, serving under Richard Nixon. Ford became President after Nixon's resignation. One of the major concerns Ford had was gaining and keeping the nation's trust after Nixon's scandal. He was also concerned with securing the nation's bonds with other countries.

    Proclamation 4311
    This proclamation was a pardon for Richard Nixon given by the new president, Gerald Ford. The reasoning behind the pardon, as listed by Ford, was that having a trial against Nixon "could not fairly begin until a year or more has elapsed" due to public bias. By that time, he reasoned, the damage will have been repaired. Also, Ford stated that Nixon had already been punished by giving up the Presidency. For these reasons, Nixon was given a full pardon for any actions during his presidency.

    The Helsinki Accord contributed a great deal to ending the Cold War, by compromising with the Soviet Union on matters such as political/military issues, economic issues, human rights, and procedures for follow-up meetings. The Act was signed by 35 nations in Helsinki, Finland.

    Jimmy Carter's Presidential Term

    Jimmy Carter was the 39th President of the United States. He is most known for the Camp David Accords, which brought peace to Israel and Egypt after three decades of violence.

    The Camp David Accords Signed
    The Camp David Accords were treaties that brokered peace between the two warring rival countries, Israel and Egypt. The leaders from each nation came to Washington D.C. and discussed the Accords for 12 days, which laid the groundwork for a peace that continues to the present.

    The Iran-Hostage Crisis
    A crisis in Iran where students took more than 60 Americans hostage in the U.S. embassy in Tehran. This event didn't end until January 21st, 1981, which was 444 days after the initial event. Many believe that this event cost President Carter his second term as President.

    Ronald Reagan was the 40th President of the United States, and a former California Governor. Reagan was well known for "Reaganomics", which called for tax cuts, decreased social spending, deregulation of local markets, and increased military spending.

    Three U.S. legislations that were used between 1982-1984 to limit U.S. aid to Contra forces in Nicaragua.
  • Strategic Defense Initiative "Star Wars"

    Strategic Defense Initiative "Star Wars"
    This idea was proposed by Reagan as the use of ground and space-based systems to protect the United States from ballistic/nuclear missiles. This project was called "Star Wars" by the media, named after the George Lucas films.
  • Invasion of Grenada (Operation Urgent Fury)

    Invasion of Grenada (Operation Urgent Fury)
    This was the U.S. invasion of Grenada after the coup and deposition of the prime minister Maurice Bishop. The invasion was over on the 15th of December, and was largely protested by the United Kingdom and Canada. It was brought before the UN Security Council as a violation but was vetoed by the U.S. members.

    A scandal during Reagan's term where arms were sold to Iran through Israel in exchange for U.S. hostages. The money made by the sale would be given to the United States, and the money was then used to illegally fund Contra forces in Nicaragua.

    Mr. Gorbachev "Tear Down This Wall" Speech
    The speech given to Mr. Gorbachev, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, by Ronald Reagan, asking him to tear down the Berlin Wall to prove his new stance on expanding Eastern Germany's freedom.

    INF Treaty Signed
    The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the U.S. and USSR is signed, limiting the range of cruise and ballistic missiles and requiring the destruction of long range missiles. The treaty was ratified May 27th, 1988.

    The Election of 1988
    The presidential election of George H. W. Bush. In the presidential race against Michael Dukakis, Bush ran an aggressive campaign focusing on a good economy and good international relations. He was also backed by Reagan, and won by over 300 electoral votes and had 40 backed states.
