Boston Tea Party
A gathering of Boston citizens led by patriot Samuel Adams disguised themselves as Mohawk Indians and boarded three British ships docked in the Boston Harbor in search of imported tea. These men chopped open the tea trunks they found onboard and dumped almost 10,000 pounds of tea into the harbor. -
First Continental Congress
Colonists met to discuss thier grievances; The goals of the meeting were to enumerate American grievances, to develop a strategy for addressing those grievanes and to formulate a colonial position on the proper relationship between the royal goverment and colonial government. -
Battle of Lexington and Concord
These battles consisted of the first shots fired in the REvolutiuonay War(near Boston); approximately 100 mintuemen and 250 British soldiers were killed. -
Second Continental Congress
Aimed to organize the defense of the colonies; The congress designated the militia forces besieging Boston as the Continentsl Army and made George Washington commander-in-chief -
Battle of Bunker Hill
First major battle of the Revolutionary War; it actually took place at nearby Breed's Hill, MA. -
American Revolution
The revolt of the American colonies against the yoke of their mother country in 1776 brought about the political movement and war known as the American Revolution. The American Revolution marked other transitions in political thought as well, most notably the growth of new republican ideals, which clashed with the traditional and formerly English set of values. It lasted from (1775-1783) -
"Common Sense" was published
Written by Tgomas Paine; he argued for the merits of republicanism over monarchy; it sold more than 100,000 copies in the first three months. -
Declaration Of Independence was signed
-made the break with Britain offical; was drafted by a committee of 2nd Continental Congress including Thomas Jefferson; the Revolutionary War then became a war for independence. -
Battle of Yorktown
Last battle of the Revolutionary War; General Lord Charles Cornwallis along with over 7,000 troops surrendered at Yorktown, Virginia. -
Treaty of Paris
The treaty ending the Revolutionary War and recognizing American independence from Britain and established the border between Canada and the United States. It also ceded Florida to Spain. -
The Virginia and New Jersey Plans
James Madison drafted the proposals and this called for seperate legislature, executive,a dn judicial branches and a truly national government whose laws would be biding uopn individual citizens as well as states. -
Constitutional Convention
Meeting in Philadelphia, PA of representatives from twelve colonies to revise the existing Articles of Confederation. -
3/5 Compromise
Delegates from other states opposed slavery, but they wanted the southern states to be a part of the United States.
The southern states wanted to count the slaves as population for representation in the new Congress. The northern states didn’t want the slaves to count if they had no rights as citizens. inally the two sides reached a compromise. The slaves would count as 3/5 of a person for representation in the House of Representatives. -

Alien and Sedition Acts were passed
-Series of laws passed by the Federalist Congress in 1798 and signed into law by President Adams. These laws included new powers to deport foreigners as well as making it harder for new immigrants to vote. Previously a new immigrant would have to reside in the United States for five years before becoming eligible to vote, but a new law raised this to 14 years. -
Marbury vs. Madison case begins
A letter of commission that William Marbury wrote to President Adams remained undelieverd when James Madison became secretary of state so Pres. Jefferson directedd him to withhold it. Marbury then proceeded to sue the court and demanded for it to be delievered. And this is what started this case, but the court soon decided it could issue no order in this case. -
President Thomas Jefferson became president
Jefferson became the first president to be inaurgurated in Washington, D.C; He walked two blocks to the unfinished capital, entered the Senate chamber, took oath by John Marshall, read his address and returned to the boardinghouse for dinner. -
Louisiana Purchase
Napoleon offered livingston $15 million for the territory; This more than doubled the territory of the U.S. -
Embargo Act was passed
Law passed by Congress and signed by President Thomas Jefferson in 1807. This law stopped all trade between America and any other country. The goal was to get Britain and France, who were fighting each other at the time, to stop restricting American trade. The Act backfired, and the American people suffered. The Act was ended in 1809. -

Fought with Britain over lingering conflicts that included impressment of American sailors, interference with shipping and collision with Northwest Territory Indians. -
The Hartford Convention
The Hartford Convention represented the climax of New England's disaffection with "Mr. Madison's War". It also carried the unmistatakable threat of sucession if its demands were ignored. -
Treaty of Ghent
The British decided that the war was not worth the cost so they constructed the Treaty of Ghent. -
