AP U.S. History Labor Unions timeline

  • Jan 1, 1512

    Encomienda System

    It was supposed to bring a compromise between the Indians and the Spanish but the Spanish forced them to do harsh labor, and the Indians protested and rebelled and it ended.
  • Indentured Servants

    They were people who were used for labor mostly to help cultivate and harvest tobacco crop in order to pay off their debts to get their freedom into the new world. They had to do hard labor and most of them past away before they got their freedom because of their hard labor.
  • African Slaves

    The slaves were used for free labor in the growing plantations and they resisted through rebellion, sabotage, and escape. They were treated inhumanely and were forced to do hard labor.
  • Bacon's Rebellion

    Nathaniel Bacon marched into Jamestown and overthrew the governor and the rebellion showed that the poor farmers wouldn't tolerate a government that cares for wealth. Also the farmers got little pay for their crops and taxes were extremely high.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Farmers rebelled against the new taxes and revolted against the tax collectors but was quickly disbanded by George Washington.
  • Scabs

    they were cheap replacement people who were hired by the factory owner in order to replace the employees who were on strike. and this wasn't very good for lobor unions because they count on people to not take those jobs so that the factory owners can negotiate on a deal.
  • Collective Bargaining

    Many employees started to negotiate with their bosses to give them better pay and working conditions and the labor union thinks it can get better deals by striking but the workers didn't want to risk their jobs.
  • Yellow Dog Contracts

    They are contracts that workers were forced to sign in order to make them not go into a union.
  • National Labor Union

    Was the first national labor federation in the United States
  • The Knights of Labor

    It was the largest and important labor organizations and it fought for higher wages, shorter hours, better working conditions etc...
  • The Grange

    was a movement by farmers in order to have political and economic advantages.
  • The Great Railroad Strike of 1877

    was a protest for second round wage cuts within a span of 4 years and it spread across the united states.
  • American Federation of Labor

    It was the first federation of labor unions and it helped to improve wages, working conditions, and working hours.
  • People's Party

    It was a revolt by farmers against the democratic and republican party for ignoring the issues that farmers were having. And the farmers wanted helped from the parties to make things better for the farmers.
  • The United Farm Workers

    It was to improve union laborers and it mostly focused on unskilled migrant laborers.
