    The change in which machines were used and factories were made. Originally we made everything by hand. This took 10x linger that it would with machines. We went from strength to power.
  • John Muir

    John Muir
    John Muir was a naturalist,author,environmental philosopher, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness. He was known as 'John of the mountains". He helped preserve different wilderness areas.
  • Walden

    Walden
    A book written about simple living in nature. It was written by Henry David Thoreau. It is about the time he spends in a cabin for 2 years, 2 months, and 2 days.
  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
    It was created by Abraham Lincoln. He gave 160 acres of land to the people. In return they had to live on that land for 5 years. He used this act as a way to encourage the Western Migration.
  • Yellowstone National Park Founded

    American Forestry Association founded
    This association is still used today to protect and restore forest ecosystems. This is and association that gets no profit. The headquarters of the American Forestry Association is in Washington D.C.

    Aldo Leopold
    He wrote the book A Sand County Almanac. It was about the interconnected communities of different populations of animals. He also helped found the Wilderness Society.
  • Yosemite plus Sequoia National Park founded

    General Revision Act
    The General Revision Act was used to allow presidents to create forest preserves. They used it to stop depletion of natural resources like wood. They also used it to stop land fraud caused by the wealthy.

    This club was founded by John Muir. This club tries to promote everything green. When I say this I mean they want to prevent global warming and use more earth friendly energies.

    The Lacey Act is used to bann trafficking in illegal wildlife. This means they would ban trade of certain wood products from certain areas.

    This service was made to sustain healthy forests for the future. It was made in the height of the Progressive Movement. The Progressive Movement was when people were trying to fix all the negative effects of the Industrial Revolution.

    Gifford Pinchot
    Gifford Pinchot managed the development of forests. He also came up with the idea of conservation. He encouraged profitable and controlled use of natural resources.
  • Audubon Society founded

    Audubon Society founded
    This society focused on protecting water birds. They especially focused on protecting the egret. It was named in honor of John James Audubon who was an artist and naturalist who focused on birds.
  • Antiquities Act

    This was the first law that protects any general kind of cultural or natural resource. This gave the president permission to protect areas of land. It also gave them permission to make national monuments.
  • Congress Becomes Upset With Roosevelt

    Congress become upset because Roosevelt was waving so much forest land so they banned further withdrawals.

    This mainly concentrated on soil conservations and reforestation. They used unemployed men to plant millions of trees. They also dug up canals and filled lakes and rivers with fish.

    This act was used to improve and regulate rangeland. They regulated the amount cattle and other animals grazed. This was also used to soil deterioration.

    This was also known as the "Duck Stamp Act". It was used to conserve the birds and mainly ducks. They made a requirement for people 16 years and older to have a federal hunting stamp.

    This is an agency that is in charge of fish management. They use this to protect the fish and their habitats. They get pollution out of the water and wildlife.

    This is a book written about the effect of pesticides and pollution on the Earth. It mainly talks about how the pollution affects birds. Many people think it is this book that started the environmental movement.

    This is an act that is used to prevent pollution. They keep forests and land healthy and only allow the wilderness to be affected by the forces of nature. They preserve the wildlife and keep motorized vehicles off the property.

    This act is used to preserve and keep rivers clean. They want to protect the water and environment around it so future generations can use it. They try to keep pollution and all negative affects away from the rivers.

    The Cuyahoga River was so polluted that it ended up catching on fire. It had tons of oil and trash in it causing it to be very flammable. This event helped create the environmental movement.

    A law that really focuses on keeping the environment healthy. It makes it to where the branches of law have to think about how anything will affect the environment before they take action. They cant put in a new highway without concidering how it affects the environment.

    RCRA (Resource Conservation and Recovery Act)
    Used to control where people put hazardous waste. They handle how to use and dispose the hazardous waste. They also look for effects that could happen from underground tanks that store some hazardous waste.
  • Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act

    This act was used to regulate the amount of coal that was being mined. They regulated the pollution caused by coal mining. They tried to use less coal because of the pollution it caused.

    Used to regulate the pollutants in water. They started to make laws that focused on controlling pollution. They controlled the waste that went in the water from industries.

    The canal was originally created to make water power. People used it as a hazardous waste disposal area. Lots of rain caused the hazardous waste and chemicals to leak into housed and caused lots of damage.

    A nuclear power plant had technical difficulties that caused panic. The coolant was very low and the core in the power plant rose in temperature. It started to leak radiation causing people in a 3 mile radius of the plant to evacuate.

    This gave Alaska lots of land. They had to make sure their new land was protected. They made sure to try and keep the land from pollution.

    Bhopal, Indian (chemical toxic cloud kills 2,000)
    An explosion caused from pesticides kills 2,000 people. It was caused by the leakage of multiple chemicals. It had a physical reaction but, nobody went to fix until it was too late.

    A nuclear accident caused because of uncontrolled reaction conditions. The safety systems were off and a steam explosion occurred. The explosion caused health issues for all the people around it.
  • Montreal Protocol

    Used to protect the Ozone layer. This protocol tries to stop the thinning of the Ozone layer. They stop or minimize the use of substances that cause the depletion of the Ozone layer.
  • Exxon Valdez

    Exxon Valdez
    A ship that had an oil spill in Alaska. It was caused by hitting Bligh Reef. It spilt millions of gallons of oil in the water affecting the habitat and animals.
  • Energy Policy Act of 1992

    A goal to create more clean energy that does not produce any pollution. They wanted more efficient and renewable energy with less negative affects on the world. They promoted energy conservation in buildings.

    Used to protect and preserve the desert. Established different national parks. An example is Death Valley.
  • BP Oil Spill

    BP Oil Spill
    A ship had an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. All efforts to stop or reduce the spillage of the oil failed. This is considered the largest marine oil spill.

    COP21
    A meeting in France to approach the global warming problem. They plan to keep the global warming under 2 degrees celsius. It is an agreement to stop greenhouse gasses.

    Used to focus on stopping climate change. They wanted to stop greenhouse gas emissions caused by people. They created treaties to decrease the amount of greenhouse gasses released in the atmosphere.
