The early morning of December 13
On the morning of December 13 before all the killings happened in Gambella, an unidentified group of people attacked a car containing eight Highlander Government Officals, killing all of them. They then displayed the bodies downtown. -

The Military ordered hundreds of ethnic Ethiopian "highlanders" living in Gambella to go get their machetes, knives, and spears so that they could join the killings of the Anuak people. -

5 days after the killings Gebre-Ab released a statement blaming the killings on Oromo Libertarian Front and the Eritean Peoples' Liberation Front, two forces who have been fighting the Meles regime. -

Some Anuaks escape
The massacre continued through April. A dozen Anuak villages have been burned to the ground and over 10,000 Anuak tribe members evacuated to refugee camps in Sudan and Kenya.
