Kansas-Nebraska Act

May 30, 1854

Made slavery the choice of popular sovereignty. Created more tension over slavery.

Bleeding Kansas

Nov 1, 1855

800 proslavery forces took over town. Destroyed most of town.

Pottawatomie Creek Massacre

May 25, 1856

John Brown and a group of abolitionists killed 5 people at the Pottawatomie creek

Harpers ferry

Oct 16, 1859

Local troops killed 10 men and hung John Brown.

Wilmot Proviso

Aug 8, 1864

Prohibited slaver in lands that would be gained from war with Mexico.
