Anthony Johnson (Introduction)
Anthony Johnson was african who was caught in the slave trade. In 1621, Johnson arrived in Virginia and started to work for a man named Richard Bennet. -
Pohatens vs white colonists
On Good Friday, the Powhaten tribes of tidewater Virginia attacked the white colonists in a determined attempt to drive them from their land. Only 5 out of the 57 men survived the attack. One of these men was Johnson. -
Anthony owns land
Johnson and his wife, Mary, own 250 acres of land, a smallheard of cattle, and 2 black servants. -

In 1652 Johnson's house caught on fire. Johnson and Maria were exscused from paying tithables by the courts. -

Even though Johnson gained his freedom after 20 years of hard bondage, he lost his farm and died. This left no land for his sons to inheret. Black slaves had it bad back then, didn't they?
