The Inland system was established to transported captured slaves from the Chesapeake region to the Deep South. Slave traders rounded up slaves by going village to village capturing them in groups. This method contributed largely to the expansion of slavery in the U.S. -

Turner's Rebellion
Turner's Rebellion was a slave lead rebellion lead by Nate Turner against white slave owners. In total 55 whites were killed before the violence was stopped by white militia. -
Gag Rule
Pro slavery members of the House Of Representatives passed the gag rule, which in turn did not allow members to discuss slavery. This is a factor that lead to the length of slavery as it was unable to be discussed in the house for so long. -
Texas Becomes a State
The Texas territory was fought for and won by the U.S. in the Mexican American war. As soon as it was won the discussion began whether it would be a free or slave state. This was major factor in what lead to the Civil War over the slavery argument. -
Mexican American War
By winning the Mexican American war the U.S. was able to gain more territory in the south. Many Southerners were excited about the new land that would lead to the expansion of slavery. The northerners feared it would lead to more conflict over the issue of slavery and they wanted the territory to be slave free. -
Underground Rail Road
Underground railroad was a secret rout taken by slaves to the north to freedom. A well known "conductor" was Harriet Tubman who help free hundreds of slaves from hardship. -
Fugitive Slave Act
This act was brought forth in the Compromise of 1850. This act allowed slaves to be returned to their masters even if found in a free state, but it was used incorrectly as free black were taken by slave owners also. -
Uncle Tom's Cabin
This was a book written by Harriet Beecher Stowe that told about the life and everyday struggle that slaves endured. This was read by many northerners and helped in the fight against slavery. -
Kansas Nebraska Act
This act gave the right to the Territories of Nebraska and Kansas to vote whether to be a free state or allow slavery. Conflicts between the north and the south lead to "Bleed Kansas". -
Dred Scott Case
In the Case of Dred Scott vs. Sandford, Scott said he was a free man that lived in a free state his whole life. The judge disagreed saying that blacks had no rights and couldn't sue the federal court.
