HMS Discovery
Robert Falcon Scott travelled by boat on the HMS Discovery to try to reach the south pole with his crew mates Ernest Shackleton and Edward Wilson. The crew flew in the first ever hot air balloon in Antartica. They didnt reach the south pole, they had to turn back due to disease. -
The Fram
Roald Amundsen from Norway, was going to the North Pole but he found out that people had discovered it before him so he decided to go to the South Pole. He hid from people that he was going so that he could arrive there before the British explorers already travelling to the South Pole. -
Terra Nova
Scott set off again with his crew in 1910 to try to beat Admunsten. He travelled first by boat, on the Terra Nova, then by ponies, dog sleds and motorised vehicles. After a few days they stopped using the ponies and the motorised vehicles because theydidnt work in the snow. They were second to arrice at the south pole on January 18, 1912. -
First flight
The first people to fly over antarctic peninsula in 1928, were Sir George Wilkins from Australia and Carl Benjamin Eielson from America. George Wilkins was knighted for this trip, -
Flight over South Pole
The first team flew over the South Pole lead by Richard Byrd. -
Polar Star
Lincoln Ellsworth from America and his crew began a flight across the continent of Antartica. They were helped by the crew of the Wyatt Earp, the boat that carried the plane to and from the continent. -
Ousland
Borge Ousland from Norway set off to cross the continent of Antartica. Borge covered the conitnent alone and without support.
