Anne Hutchinson Birth-Backround History
Anne Marbury Hutchinson was born in July in 1591. She eventually got married to William Hutchinson and had a total of 15 children over time in her life. Anne took after her familys religous views(Puritan), which is why they moved to Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1634, in America, to expand in their religon and share their beliefs. -

First Organized Attack- Before moving to America
Anne Hutchinson's first organized attack was on the male-dominant, puritan religous establishment back in England. -
Working in the Colony
As they settled in their new home in Massachusetts Bay Colony, Anne Hutchinson started working as a midwife. She gave spititual support to women in childbirth. Her spiritual advice was catagorized as Puritan Orthodox, which most people didn't agree with. Many people critizied Anne and her work, she enherited her religon from her father. Her father actually was a dissendent of a minister who was imprisoned because of his suspicious religon. They followed the teachings of John Cotton. -
Anne Hutchinsons Meetings
When Anne would give her spiritual support to women, she became more and more popular the more she would preach. A particular event called the Antinomian Controversey of 1636, was an event she was holding specially on the teachings of John Cotton. He was the man who Anne's family worshipped as their religous leader. This event attracted over 60 people. But this wasn't a very good thing because this is what brought up the harsh critism that got Anne into trial. -
Anne in Trial
People started questioning Anne's beliefs and critizied her work. Over a peroid of time, her preaching would bring out a crowd close to 60! That was the known cause to how her beliefs were brought out to public. Anne Hutchinson was brought to court for her case. She was eventually charged with "disturbing the peace". -
New Colony in Rhode Island
Anne, her husband William, and their 15 children were banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637. They said she was "not a women fit for a society". They moved to Rhode Island to start there own colony. -
Founded the town of Pocasset
They founded the town of Pocasset and established the colony with the "first civil goverment'". Anne Hutchinson was known as Americas earliest feminist. -
William Hutchinson's Death
William Hutchinson died in 1642. After that, Anne and her kids moved to a Dutch colony in New York away from Pocasset. They still continued their beliefs in the line of John Cotton. After Anne and her kids moved to New York, they had no further problems with critism on their religon.(Orthodox Puritan). -
Anne Hutchinsons Death
Anne Hutchinson and her several children were settled in New York for a short time. Their time in New York was much easier than living in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, and Pocasset. Sadly, Anne and 5 of her children were killed in an indian raid in 1643. They got caught up in the dipute between Dutch colonists and the Alqonquians. This terrible event brought an end to Anne Hutchinsons life. -
Anne Hutchinsons Legacy
After Anne died, she remained an icon of American intellectual life, and was reconized as one of America's earliest femimist. She may not have been as well known as Abraham Lincoln, Clara Barton, or Benjamin Frankiln, but Anne Hutchinson is just as important to America, and its future.
