The Effects of the Popularization of Anime in Global Media

  • Creation

Anime is a shortened version of the Japanese word for animation. The Japanese use it to refer to all versions of animation however in the west it is used only to refer to Japanese animation. Anime can be traced all the way back to 1917 where the earliest verified anime films were created. Anime today focuses more on environments and realism than animating movement, and is also characterized by it's use of camera techniques.
  • Propaganda in WW2

During World War 2, anime was created to help the Japanese war effort and some propaganda films were created. Momotarō no Umiwashi (1943) and Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei (1945) are some examples with Momotarō: Umi no Shinpei being the first feature length anime film ever.
  • American Occupation of Japan

After losing World War 2, Japan was occupied by American troops. While the Americans were in Japan they shared their cartoons and comics with the people. These cartoons and comics had a big influence on the post-war population and laid way for Japan to start producing their own animation. Somebody who was influenced by these cartoons is Osamu Tezuka, known as "the godfather of anime". A pioneer in the industry, helped to popularize much of the classic style of anime such as wide eyed characters.

1980-90's: The Golden Age of Anime

During the 80's and 90's, anime experienced what many call a "golden age" with the release of many classic anime and their introduction into western pop-culture. Dragonball Z, and Pokémon are examples of anime that helped to represent and popularize the genre. It was a niche market in the west until the late 90's where Pokémon rocketed anime into the mainstream. Access to anime up to this point was scarce and those who were into it seen as weird. This era helped to normalize anime into the west.
  • Effects of Popularization

Anime allows for others to experience aspects of Japan such as the language, architecture, foods, music, and other traits of Japanese culture without visiting Japan. For many today anime has become their introduction to Japanese society and customs. The popularization of anime has been positive as it allows Japanese people to spread the aspects of their culture that they care about, around the world. Just as Japanese animators were inspired by Americans, anime has inspired many western studios.
  • Why the Popularity

People watch anime to be immersed in a story and to experience with the characters. Anime reflects not only how Japan is now but the future or the past, and what could be. Anime is an artistic expression that is always changing to reflect the feelings and stories that Japanese creators want to tell. It can be anything and that is why so many people are drawn to it. The popularization will only lead to more anime being created and more exposure globally for Japanese culture and art.
