Japanese Animal Welfare Society
Founded in 1945 by mainly British residents that did not agree with how animals were being treated in Japan. The main focus was dogs in research. The main group is located in the UK and they also have sister branches in Japan. The goal is to rescue and help provide a better life for animals that are in inhumane situations. Pet Animals Act
This act is from the UK and requires that anyone who sells pets at a pet store have a license. Through this process stores are inspected and animals must be kept inhumane conditions. United States Animal Welfare Act
In 1966 the Animal Welfare Act was passed by congress. This Act protects dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, and nonhuman primates that are used in research, exhibit, or sale. It was set in place to protect the animals from unlawful sale, transport, or handling. International Fund for Animal Welfare
IFAW is a world organization that works to protect all animals. IT can be as different to saving dogs and cats after an earthquake to protecting whales from poaching. U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act
Marine mammals are a vital part of our ocean's ecosysem and without them the natural balance of the ocean would stop. The act prohibits any U.S. citizen or those in U.S. water from taking or harming a marine mammal. Jane Goodall Institute
Jane Goodall is famous for her work with protecting and understanding chimpanzees. Most of her work was done in Tanzania in the Gombe Stream Game Reserve. Swiss Federal Act on Animal Protection
This Act covers all aspects of animal protection. This includes research, treatment of pets, sales of animals, and farming. Animals must have their needs meet and can not and their welfare protected. They must also not be exposed to unjustified pain.

PETA
This US based animal rights group was started in 1980 and stands for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, "animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment." This group pays close attention to animals in research and those for entertainment and is well known for anti-fur campaigns. The group is thought by some to be controversial with undercover investigations and associations to groups that are considered domestic terrorists by the FBI.

McDonald's Animal Welfare Standards
In 2000 McDonald's was the first U.S. food supplier to declare animal welfare standards for their egg producers. They require that chickens have appropriate space and cannot have food withheld. They also continued their quest in 2003 by stopping growth promoting hormones in chickens. The CHIMP Act stands for, Chimpanzee Health Improvement Maintenance and Protection Act. This act was started to provide a sanctuary for Chimpanzees after they have been used for research. The act is very specific to make sure that these chimps have a good place to retire.

This group covers all aspects of animal welfare in Australia. The AAWS wants every animal to have appropriate housing, food, medical care and attention in natural disasters. This partnership brings together retailers, farmers, and even scientists. Farms that meet the strict animal welfare regulations are given a rating from 1 to 5+.
