U.S. Animal Welfare Act 1966 (Public Law 89-544)
-was created after the video 'Dog Consintration Camp' Was brang to the public eye Sets minnimumn standards for the handleing, sale and care of (your basic pets) by animal dealers and labatories.
The (AWA) only covers the following animals:
-cats
-dogs
-no human primates
-hamsters
-rabbits
-guiena pigs
The research labs had to obtain a certificate to test, and a certificate to transport any of the above listed animals.
-This Act was latter amended several times- -
1970 Admendment Animal Wellfare Act
First Admendment to the Animal Wellfare Act: (signed by Richard Nixon)
-Now, instead of the 6 species, all warm blooded labatory animals covered
-Instead of needing a certificate, all animals crossing any state lines were under USDA's juristiction.
-Added a legal tranqulizing dose
-increased understanding of the 'welfare' of the lab animals. -
1976 Admendment of Animal Welfare Act
This admendment was brought to attention because venues usuing animals to fight and the transprtation of animals.
-required transporters to carry a license and for the animal to travel in a carrier.
After sevral deaths due to poor travel conditions this was largley
brought to attention. -
Food Security Act 1985
Act added for saftey of the animals we consume. -
Admendment of Animal Welfare Act 2002/2007
Argumentation over animals, the term animal changed to mean:
all warm blooded, except: birds, mice of the genus Mus, and rats of the genus Rattus, bred for use in research. Making the laws only cover what is definded by the refind term 'animal'
2007: George W. bush signed :"prohibit knowingly selling, buying, transporting, or delivering, in interstate or foreign commerce, a knife, a gaffe, or any other sharp instrument for attachment to the leg of a bird for use in an animal fighting venture." -
Minter-Smith v. State (Florida) 864 So.2d 1141
-Police responded to a dog fighting complaint and then entered the home without a warrant and collected evidence. Appellate court held that no exception to the warrant requirement exists.- -
People v. Alvarado (Califorina) 23 Cal.Rptr.3d 391
Alvarado was drunk and stabbed 2 out of his three dogs multiplue times, was mistrialed then later convicted and sentenced to 2 years in prison.

Allen V. Municipality of Anchorage (168 P.3d 890)
-A woman was convicted of animal cruelty as a result of her hoarding 180-200 cats, three dogs, 13 birds, and three chickens. She appealed the probation that banned keeping animals for the ten year probationary period.-
-convicted- sentenced to 30 days in jail and 10 years probation. -

Arrested on that thursday on animal assult charges. -
