Angelina Lisciendrello's Journey from Italy

  • Making the Big Decision

    Making the Big Decision
"All people wishing to go to America, board now!" The boatsman yells. I struggle to almost jump onto the boat. I turned around to make sure my friend had made it with me, he had. As a result of all the Italians here, some of us choose to move to America. It was supposed to be a free land, where people had rights and could own their own land. "I can't wait to finally step into America and open our own shop!" I say from excitement. "In time Angelina, in time we will." My friend tells me.

  • Political Rights

    Political Rights
It's been five months, I watch as men line the streets at a booth. "What's going on?" I ask a man walking by. "Voting for President!" He replies. Voting? President? I walk towards the booths to see two men standing on a stage. Their names I barely can read...Rutherford Hayes and Samuel Tilden. Even though women were citizens, we weren't aloud to vote. That must have been why I've seen women that tried to have a say at the booths and was stopped.. What was wrong with women voting?
  • State Laws Unconstitutional

    State Laws Unconstitutional
It's been a while since the new president Rutherford B. Hayes was elected. Everyone seems happy about him. Something Steve called Supreme Court came to a meeting with the President. It was announced that State laws on immigration were unconstitutional. Whatever that meant... We started getting weird looks from all the native-born people. Them looking at us like we were evil. Like how women were treated.
  • Saving Up

    Saving Up
As a result of women being able to work, I was able to earn money towards my dream. I collect todays salary from my boss and head home. I stick the money into the jar and add it to the taly in my head. I happily smile as I realize we've earned enough money. I quickly tell Steve, "We've earned enough money!" I yell holding the jar up high. We rush out the door and over to the nearest building for sale, to start our shop.
  • Business Troubles

    Business Troubles
I hear the quiet noise of a hammer against wood. I look out the door to see the shop next door is closing down. I go over to the man and ask him why he's closing his shop. "Just not making enough money to be able to sustain this shop. I'm being told to pack up the store." Even though, companies like mine were fine, I look down the street to see a lot of companies are closing down. It was because of low sales, and something else... Something big was happening, I could tell, but what was it?
  • Assassination and War..?

    Assassination and War..?
After being one of the few shops left, my workers and I figured out it was that there was major problems with the major growth spree of industry being over. Just this morning, a man by the name Archduke Franzferinad was assassinated. People are starting to declare war. They're calling it, World War 1. I'm hoping that this war doesn't threaten the lives of our citizens and my shop. I don't want war.
