5 laws passed that dealt with the issue of slavery, fugitive slave act was amended, slave trade in Washington was abolished, California enterd union as free state, territorial gov't created in Utah, and settled boundry disute bwtween Teaxas and Mexico. -
Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin
Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote this novel in reaction to the recently tightened fugitive slave laws. She was satisfied with the laws and even more when slaverly ended. -
Kansas-Nabraska Act
It repealed the Missouri Compromise, allowing slavery in the territory north of 36° 30´ latitude. The issue of slavery would be decided by the residents of each territory. -
Bleeding Kansas
The period of violence that during the settling of the Kansas territory. While Kansas decided to use the principle of popular sovereignt, the free-state settlers flooded into Kansas to try to influence the decision which caused violence to erupt. -
Brooks/Sumner Affair(Violence in Congress)
Charles Sumner senator of Massachusetts was at his desk one day. Shortly after representative Preston Brooks entered the office and started beating Sumner with his cane. -
Dred Scott Decision
In the case of Dred Scott v Sanford, it was decided that an African American person who was a slave, or used to be one, or the child of a slave could never be a U.S. Citizen and was not protected by the U.S. Constitution. -
John Brown's Raid
A slave revolt led by John Brown with the intention of capturing Harpers Ferry, a U.S. Armory in Virginia. He was soon taken. On the 18th, marines led by Colonel Robert E. Lee got inside and killed Brown and captured many rebels. -
Election of 1860
A republican, Abraham Lincoln ran against Stephen Douhlas and John C. Breckenridge who were both with slavery. Abraham Lincoln won with 180 electoral votes against 132. He was elected the 16th president of the United States.
