My name is Wong Vu, I was born into poverty and famine, I live in China. I have a mom, sister, and brother. My dad was killed in a fight. Where I live in China, there is many children to play with, but not a lot of room. It was very dirty and loud where I lived. We had very little food and shelter. We are leaving China to ge away from famine and poverty. In America we hope to gain oppourtunity. The purpose of this is to portray the life of an Angel Island immigrant.

    Immigrating to America
At the docks, we boarded large wooden boats. On the boat, it was very hot and cramped. Some people would get sea sick and omit bodily fluids, this would make the boat wreak. The only thing that wasn't a problem was food, you could get 3 meals for 60 cents! It was nice to go up on the deck and get some fresh air. Everyday on the boat I would dream of seeing the "golden mountain." On September 15, I heard heard a man holler, "land, ho." When I looked, there it was, the promise land.

When we got off the boat, we all funnled into lines. It was very crowded and loud. While in line I recongnized a woman, it was Mrs. Chang, our neighbor. She was cry and repeating, "My son, my son." I guessed that her and her son got seperated, I wanted to do something, but I couldn't. When we got checked by the doctor we gathered our stuff and walked out of the building. This was the start to a new begining.
  • Mining For Money

    Mining For Money
Today I started my job as a miner, my work is very dangerous. I go to the mines for about 10 hours a day mining silver, gold, you name it, I'm mining it. Nitroglycerin makes my job a lot more difficult. If you drop a vail of it, you're dead. My boss isn't racist since we work for such little money. But, with the white miners, they are very racist. I just tend to ignore them. Mining is not a job for me, but thats what it takes to live in America.

    The Earthquake of 1906
It was early in the moring, everything started to shake, I heard screams and yells from people in the streets. Just what I need, an Earthquake. I rush out into the streets, debris falling left and right. San Fransico Hall is begining to crumble apart, I run back inside. I ball up into a closet and wait for the screams to end. After about a minute it was over. I crawled out of the closet and looked around, everything was rubble, thank god I survived. But, many did not.
  • Making Dreams Come True

    Making Dreams Come True
While I was mining I thought about something, would do I really want to do, Well I've always wanted to be a farmer, probably the best job for me and I won't have to worry about exploding. I traveled out west to get a cut of land, I would plan to plant potatoes and other vegatables. I moved to Kansas, a little far, but a good state. I ran into another farmer named Ivan Aislin, he was pretty nice. Now in Kansas I have made my dreams come true.
