  • My Birthday

    My Birthday
My name is Chang Poe. I live in the little village of Woe - Shue. I live there with my father ,mother, aunts, uncles and our grandfather. My familly has been in the rice business many many years, but there are too many rice farmers in the little village. Most of the older farms are going out of business. My father has decided that we are going to the new world soon.

    Angel Island
The boat had stopped nearly 1/2 a mile outside of Angel Island. There we were transported by little ferries to take us to the island. The ferries kept slowly rotating in a circle from the boat to the island. When we finally got on the boat it took us forever to get to the island. When we got there all we did was wait in another line till we got approved by a doctor. At the end of all of the lines, we got stopped by an official looking man who said we were going to have to be detained.

    Detained
We were told to take up all of our things and come with him for further inspection. He said that it would be a few days at best before we could go. He showed us our barracks where we were to sleep. It was just a small wooden building. We were to stay with all the other Chinese men who were being detained. We stayed there for three days. I listened to some of them tell stories while others were engraving poems on the walls and floor.
  • Gold

    Gold
Since we had entered the states about 20 years ago, my father and mother had died and there has been news of gold Further upstate. So my cousin and I have decided to buy some land and settle a claim there so we can become rich. Panning for the gold is alot of work. At the end of the day we only have been coming up with a few ounces of gold wich would be just fine, but because of the gold rush prices for shovels and food have sky rocketed we may end up having to return to China.
  • War

    War
I now am married with three kids and war is upon us. Many of our neighbors are being drafted off to war. Just this week I was sent a letter myself to be ay the recruiters office Saturday afternoon. I have heard stories about the war, that the war is awful but the battle is not the worst of it. I've heard that it is better to die in the heat of the battle and be left on the field than to face the doctor with a wound and die a week later and be sent home in a body bag.
