Andrew's Involvement with the Organization's Electronic Medical Record

  • Electronic Medical Record is Introduced

I first began working with my organization's electronic medical record when it was implemented in the emergency room. This was my first exposure to gathering patient information electronically.
  • Became Primary Electronic Medical Record Trainer

After a number of years of proficient use, I was asked to become the primary electronic medical record trainer for the department's non-clinical staff.
  • First Job in the Information Services Department

This position was titled "Associate Clinical Systems Analyst". This position involved on-site support for all of the adult ambulatory clinics at our main hospital. This provided me with a lot of exposure to how the electronic medical record is used by our clinical staff as well as a foundational understanding of how the system is built (based upon my daily need to troubleshoot).
  • First Job as an Electronic Medical Record Builder

I transitioned into the role of "Clinical Systems Analyst". I continued to work with my organization's ambulatory clinics, however, I now worked on strategic and development related projects. No longer focused on issue resolution, I began to take the needs/requests of our clinics and develop an electronic medical record solution that fit efficiently into their workflows.
  • Transitioned into an Operational Role

I accepted the position of "Operations Process Analyst". Again, I continued to work with our outpatient clinics, but in this role I no longer did electronic medical record system build. I worked with leadership to help direct projects and incorporate my technical knowledge.
  • Job Outside of the Electronic Medical Record

I have just accepted a new job. I will still be working with a large healthcare organization in Madison, Wisconsin, however, I will no longer be working with the electronic medical record. Instead, I will be working with a variety of business-related teams that each use different software applications. My title is "Performance Improvement Specialist"; I will work with these various teams to improve their interaction and achieve better solutions (independently and together).
