Nullification Crisis
Beginning in 1828, Jackson placed a new tariff on raw materials and manufactured goods, making them more expensive and hurting the Southern economy, causing South Carolina to threaten to secede if the tariff was not taken back, and came close to a civil war if not for Henry Clay's Compromise Tariff in 1833. -
