"I aint shining your boots"
At the age of 13, Jackson signed up for the Revloutionary War. After a refusing to shine a British officer's boots, Andrew was struck with a sword (leaving a scar on his hand). Andrew's mother obtained him from the military, but later died from smallpox. This made Jackson develope a strong hatred for the British, -
Jackson begins to study law
In 1784 Jackson began to study law. He built a successful legal practice, and also bought and solf land. Jackson then purchased a plantation near Nashville and ran successfully for Congress. -
Jefferson developes "Doctrine of Nullification"
Jefferson proposes the idea that a state should be able to reject (nullify) a federal law that is considered unconstitutional. -
Jackson joins war of 1812
After the War of 1812 broke out, Jackson was appointed general in the Army. -
"Old Hickory"
At the Battle of New Orleans in 1825, even though his troops were WAY outnumbered, Jackson defeats the British, Andrew earned the nickname "Old Hickory" after a soldier claimed he was "tough as hickory". Jackson was a national war hero. -
Election of 1824
After a fierce battle in election, Jackson won the popular vote of America. Unfortunately, Andrew didn't have 131 (the neccessay ammount) the win the election. Jackson was outraged. The election had been stolen from him. He was determined to win the election of 1828. -
Cherokee Constitution
The Cherokee indians drew up a constitution based on the U.S onstitution, and founded the Cherokee Nation. A year later, gold was discovered on their land, which was a game changer when it came to the Native American Removal act. -
"Tariffs of Abomination"
During the last months of Quincy Adam's Presidency, congress passed a bill that raised tariffs on raw materials and manufactured goods. Southerners were OUTRAGED!! The tariffs helped Jackson win the election because the American people blamed Adams. -
The NASTY campaign
The 4 years between 1824-1828, Jackson and Adams played nasty. They insulted one another through campaign signs and speeches. Jackson WON this election, which unfortunately came at a high price. Soon after Andrew won, his wife died of a heart attack. (He believed the nasty campaign is what killed her) -
Jackson's inauguration
Jackson looked sad, thin, and pale, while at his inauguration on March 4, 1829. People guess this is because of his wife's death right before. -
Indian Removal Begins
Early Fall of 1831, Chocta and other Southeast indian tribes are removed from their land and placed in the new "Indian Territory" -
Worcester vs. Georgia
Chief Justice John Marshall, ruled that only the federal government, not the state, could make laws governing the Cherokees. -
Round up of 16,000 Indians
General Winifield Scott led his troops to round up around 16,000 Cherokees, and forced them into camps. Soldiers took people from their homes with nothing but the clothes on their backs. This journey became known as the "Trail of Tears", because 1/4 of the indians died on their deadly trip through the West.
