In this final major battle of the War of 1812, Jackson and thousands of frontiersmen and Choctaw Indians defeated the British army with only 7 American casualties. -
Election of 1824
Jackson campaigned against John Quincy Adams, Henry Clay, and William Crawford. Jackson won the popular vote but no one won the electoral votes so the House of Representatives had to choose the winner. As speaker of the house, Clay encouraged representatives to vote for Adams. When Adams won he named Clay his secretary of state. Jackson was furious and accused Adams and Clay of making a "corrupt bargain". -
Election of 1828
Jackson ran against John Q Adams. Jackcson won the election easily and the win was a victory for the common people. -
Indian Removal Act
In 1830 Congress passed an act that forced many Native Americans to move west of the Mississippi. The Cherokee had to walk hundreds of miles west. -
Nullification Crisis
In 1828 Congress passed the highest ever tariff, called the Tariff of Abominations by woutherners. South Carolina thought they had the right to nullify the law because they thought it was unconstitutional. South Carolina passed the Nullification Act declaring the tariff illegal and threatened to secede if challenged. Henry Clay proposed a compromise that lowered the tariff but gave the president the power to use the army to enforce the tariff. -
Worcester v. Georgia
Georgia passed a law that all Indians in the state had to follow state laws but the Cherokees argued that treaties protected their rights. John Marshall declared Georgia's actions unconstituional and said that the US Constitution protected Native Americans. -
Bank War
Jackson felt the bank was too powerful. He vowed to kill the bank and vetoed the charter.
