First Olympic games
The Greeks invented an athletic competition to honor the Gods that they believed in. This competition was called the Olympics because it was hosted in Olympia every two years. No women were allowed to watch these games and only Greek nationals were allowed to play. The Olympics ranged from one day to five day events. There would be sacrifices of animals to please the Gods on the middle day of the festival. Many of the events had the participants injured and some were even to the death.
