It started by a messenger, going to the city states likely to compete and told them when it would held and about the truce to stop fighting. It was a festival in honor of Zeus.The games that were played were footraces, a javelin throw, wrestling, and horse back riding. The winner would get a olive crown and go back to their city-state a hero. -
490 BCE
The Start of the Persian War
Miletus broke away from Persia and asked other city-states to help overthrown the Persians. The Athenians helped.They took control of Sardis and Asia Minor saw this and joined with them. This is was started the Persian War. -
480 BCE
The Battle of Salamis
This was a battle that led to the end of the Persian War. This battle was on ships. The Persians had big ships and were sure they were going to win but the Athenians knew the waterways better. They lured them into shallow water and rammed them and sunk their ship. The Persians were surprised by their defeat. -
479 BCE
The End of the Persian War
This was the last battle of the Persian War. The Spartan general led the Greeks to the last battle against the Persians at the battle of Plataea.The Persian were finally defeated and the Persians were drove out of Greece. -

The Golden Age of Athens
After the Persian War the Athenians created the Delian League as an alliance with other city-states encase the Persians would attack again. This was the start of the Golden age of Athens. During it Pericles made Athens so much stronger especially the democracy. He got more people to do government work by making it a paying job. He rebuilt the Parthenon and drama started to get big. -

Socrates
Socrates was one of the most famous philosopher in Greece. Socrates taught people a different way to think by asking them a series of questions.This was called the Socratic Method. He was executed for being accused of corrupting young men. The only things we now about him that were written down by his student Plato. -
Period: 430 BCE to 404 BCE
The Persian War
This was the war against Athens and Sparta. The first battle Sparta came to Athens and burned all their crops but Athens would not fight so the Spartans finally retreated because the were hungry. When the Athenian were hiding Pericles got sick and died. The next battle Alcibiades had a plan but it did not succeed and they lost. The Spartans built their own navy and the Athenians surrendered to them in 404 BC. The Golden Age of Athens was over. -

Plato
Plato was the student of Socrates. He wrote about Socrates' death and conversations. He fled Athens when Socrates was killed. He founded an academy. In his dialogues he allowed readers to imagine they were part of a philosophical conversation. He thought philosophers should be the central role of society and did not like democracy because he thought in was giving power to people who didn't understand justice. He wrote a dialogue called the "Republic". -

Aristotle
A student of Plato. He believed there was always more than one way to explain things. He developed the basics of scientific research. He believed that the purpose of life was to exercise your abilities and virtues. But there were bad things about him like he valued men above women and aristocrats were superior to non aristocrats. And he believed that slaves were property like a tool. He was know as "the Philosopher" in the Middle Ages. -

Alexander the Great
When his father died he was in control of Macedonia. He battled Asia Minor and Persia and won. He conquered their land. Alexander owned a lot of land now but wanted more. His army marched to Egypt and conquered parts but they retreated when the went against the elephants.
