The Olympic Games
The Olympic games were held every four years in Olympia. There were a series of events that only men could part take in. The men who won were awarded a crown of olive leaves. They were also hero's to their city-states that they said they were competing for. They also had a very high ranking in the city-state. -

Percles
A very important man in Athenian democracy and government. He built walls and then had the government pay the people who participated in it. He died during the Pelopennsian War of plague. -
490 BCE
The start of The Persian War
This was the start of a long war between the Persians and the Greeks. The Persian Empire was huge but Xerxes the Persian king wanted more. Greece was their next target. Athens, Sparta, and other Greek city-states all joined together to fight the common enemy and keep freedom. -

Hippocrates
A scientist who figured out many important things about our health. He realized that our weather, location, and drinking water can affect our health. Also, all doctors now have to take a Hippocratic oath. -

The Parthenon
The Parthenon, a temple built to Athena. Athens built to this because Athens is named after Athena. The Parthenon is huge and amazing architecture. This amazing building was built on the Parthenon. -

Plato
A student of Socrates that wrote down what he might have said down in the market place. He started his own school after he fled Athens thinking he was not welcome. He didn't believe in democracy and thought philosophers should have a key place in government. He also had a successful student named Aristotle. -
399 BCE
Socrates
He lived during the Golden age of Athens. He also fought in the Peloponnesian War. His student Plato wrote down what Socrates might have said. Socrates would go down to the market place and ask the men of Athens questions about why they live their lives like they did. Socrates was then condemned to death for upsetting the people of Athens. He drank poison and then died. -
380 BCE
Aristophanes
A playwright from Athens. His plays usually would make fun of important states men such as Pericles. Other playwrights that took a more drama turn on his plays such as Euripides, and philosophers like Socrates. -
334 BCE
Alexander the Great first attack on the Persians
Alexander went and attacked Asia Minor with 35,000 men and no navy and he won. He then faced the Persian emperor Darius lll and he then retreated after a very fierce fight. -
323 BCE
The start of the Hellenistic Period
The Hellenistic Period started after the untimely death of Alexander the Great. In this period they improved cities, built gymnasiums, and theaters.
