  • Transmission of Yellow Fever discovered.

    Transmission of Yellow Fever discovered.
On August 27, 1900, Carroll allowed an infected mosquito to feed on him. He developed a severe case of yellow fever but proved that mosquitoes transmitted the feared disease. Yellow Fever is a close cousin to the Zika virus, but much more deadly. There is a shortage of vaccine to protect against Yellow Fever. Yellow Fever is spread by Aedes mosquitos just like the Zika virus is. Yellow Fever kills approximately 60,000 people each year. No specific drugs to treat Yellow Fever.
  • First discovery of the Zika Virus

First discovery of the Zika Virus
First discovered in monkeys in 1947 and is named after the Zika Forest in Uganda. As of right now there is not a cure for the virus. Unlike Aids and Yellow Fever, the Zika Virus is not fatal but has been linked to cause birth defects such as microcephaly if a pregnant women is infected. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNZQPiVDdAU
  • First Diagnosed case of AIDS

    First Diagnosed case of AIDS
Aids was first seen in the 1920's when a few people died from an unknown death. In 1962 scientists found out that the 'unknown death' was AiDS. AIDS evolved from chimpanzee version of the immunodeficiency virus (called simian immunodeficiency virus or SIV) most likely was transmitted to humans and mutated into HIV when humans hunted these chimpanzees for meat and came into contact with their infected blood. The Zika virus also originated in monkeys before it was passed on to the mosquito.
  • Discovery of Ebola

    Discovery of Ebola
The first discovery of Ebola was in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now known as he Democratic Republic of the Congo. Since then there have been outbreaks of this disease throughout Africa
  • HIV/AIDS protest begins

    HIV/AIDS protest begins
Protests started at this time because the governent didn't want to get involved with AIDS because it was thought to be a "disease of the gay'. The key difference between outbreak of AIDS and Zika virus is the public reaction .AIDS was able to spread without much reaction from the government and health organizations because of the social status of those (at that time) believed to be the ones to get the disease: gay men, people of color, and people who use drugs.
  • WHO declared Ebola a PHEIC

    WHO declared Ebola a PHEIC
In March of 2014 the World Health Organization declared Ebola a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.Only five months after WHO declared Ebola a PHEIC over 1,000 people died from the virus. WHO officials blamed the slow Ebola response on IDC (infection disease control), on poor budget cuts and lack of communication between infected countries.

  • Discovery in Brazil

    Discovery in Brazil
First case of Zika in humans on May 1, 2015. This marked the start of the outbreak. Key difference between outbreak of AIDS and Zika virus is the public reaction. AIDS was able to spread without much reaction from the government and health organizations because of the social status of those (at that time) believed to be the ones to get the disease: gay men, people of color, and people who use drugs.
  • WHO declared Zika a PHEIC

    WHO declared Zika a PHEIC
On February 1, 2016, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Zika virus a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). AIDS and yellow fever were also declared PHEIC's because of how quickly they spread. WHO declared Zika a PHEIC quickly because they were criticized so much for not responding to the Ebola outbreak quick enough. They wanted to get a jump start on research to find cures and better understand Zika.

  • Zika causes birth defects

    Zika causes birth defects
The risks are higher for a baby to be born with birth defects if the mother is infected during the earlier stages of pregnancy versus later. During the earlier stages of pregnancy that lining between mother and child is still very fragile, Zika attacks those cells and invades the barrier. As it does so, the virus also ruins the growth of the blood vessels, limiting the baby's blood flow and stunting fetal development. There have been no scientific facts connecting Ebola or AIDS to birth defects.
  • Start of Olympics

    Start of Olympics
2016 Olympics are in the progress of being postponed because Rio, Brazil is in the heart of the outbreak. The Olympics bring in roughly 500,000 visitors to watch. If the Olympics take place in Brazil in 2016 it will risk infecting millions of people with the virus. If any of the individuals going to Brazil contract the disease they can bring it back to their home country and spread it. This will make the disease spread easier and faster than it would if the Olympics were moved or postponed.
