Slaves arrive in America
In 1619 the 12 years after it's founding the British colony of Jamestown Virgina recived a Dutch vessel whose crew was starving. Aboard were 20 captured Africans, whom the crew exchanged for food and money thus slavery come to the British colonies. -
Indetured Servants
Slavery would slowly spread to each of the 13 colonies. But the majority of colonial labor would consist of indentured servants. -
John Punch slave for life
John Punch, a runway indentured servant, first documented slave for life. -
Mulatto Children
Legislation was passed defining the status of mulatto children. Children would be considerded the same status as there mother. If the child was born to a slave, the child would be considerd a slave. -
Intermarriage Prohibited
First act prohibting intermarriage. -
Slavery in South Increase
In Virgina slaves grew from 7% of the population in 1680 to 30%by 1720. In South Carolina the same period saw an increase from 17% to 70%. -
Stono Rebellion
It was the largest slave uprising in the British mainland colonies, with 21 whites and 44 blacks killed. -
The Increase of Slavery in the North
In New York, by 1750 the slave population reached 15%, in Rhode Island it reached only 10%.
