American Revolution Timeline - (N.H, J.S., K.C.)

  • Period: to

    French and Indian War

    Cause- Both wanted control of the vast American territory west of the Appalachian mountains.
    Effect-This was a very costly war lasting 7 years The british were in deep debt after this war, even though The British ended their policy of salutary neglect- keeping Colonials under close watch.
  • Proclamation of 1763 established

    Proclamation of 1763 established
    Cause-British victory in French and Indian War.
    Effect-In order to prevent conflict with Native Americans over land, colonial settlers were forbidden to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains without permission from the British government.
  • The Sugar Act passed

    The Sugar Act passed
    Cause- The French and Indian war caused British debt; so to try to pay off some of the debt, the British made The Sugar Act.
    Effect- required colonists to attach expensive tax stamps to all newspapers and leagal documents
  • The Stamp Act passed

    The Stamp Act passed
    Cause- Was put into place after The French and Indian war took place. It was a costly war, and England thought the colonists should help pay because they took part in the war- so they taxed paper products.
    Effect-It outraged colonists because they felt it was a violation of their rights. They began violent boycotts as well. Now the famous "No Taxation without Representation" were the cries of the colonists.
  • Quartering Act Placed

    Quartering Act Placed
    Casue- Britain created this along with other acts to try to pay off some of the debt from the French amnd Indian War.
    Effect- Required colonies to provide barracks and supplies to British troops.
  • Stamp Act Congress was held-Stamp Act Repealed

    Stamp Act Congress was held-Stamp Act Repealed
    Cause- The violent fighting and boycotting of the colonists after the Stamp Act was placed caused severe disturbance with the congress- something had to be done.
    Effect- They repealed the Stamp Act along with the Sugar Act- to somewhat help please the Colonists.
  • Declatory Act passed

    Declatory Act passed
    Cause- This act accompanied the repeal of the Stamp Act- It to helped to calm the colonist's outrage,

    Effect- This act stated that the British Parliament’s taxing authority was the same in America as in Great Britain- it also asserted its complete authority to make binding laws on the American colonies “in all cases whatsoever."
  • Townshend Acts Passed

    Townshend Acts Passed
    Cause-Again it was to raise money; this time by
    collect revenue from the colonists in America by putting customs duties on imports of glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea (it was a series of acts.) to support colonial governors, judges, customs officers and the British army in America.
    Effect- This as well angered the colonists becuase they felt that Parliament had the right to control imperial commerce but not the right to tax the colonies- they still felt it was a violation of their rights.
  • Boston Massacre Occured

    Boston Massacre Occured
    Cause-A tense situation because of a heavy British military presence in Boston and already upset colonists because of taxes caused intence brawls between civilians and soldiers; between troops discharging their muskets after being attacked by a rioting crowd.
    Effect- This turned into a turning point for the American Revolution; The Boston Massacre helped spark the colonists' desire for American independence and helped turn the colonists against England.
  • Tea Act Placed

    Tea Act Placed
    Cause- Again remains this pattern of the need for the British Parliament to raise money- so they taxed the tea.
    Effect- Now not only were the colonists outraged- but they could not afford the new taxes.So they decided to take further actions into their own hands...
  • Boston Tea Party occurs

    Boston Tea Party occurs
    Cause- The new expensive prices on tea from the tea act were some that the colonists could not afford/ and again it violated them of their rights.
    Effect- So to take matters into their own hands-one day (Dec 16, 1773) a ship pulled into harbor with tea from East India that the King had bought to sell and raise taxes on to the colonists. Some colonists gathered and stole tea from the boats, and dumped it into the harbor as a political movement to show the British that they didint need them.
  • Second Continental Congress met

    Second Continental Congress met
    Cause- The Second Continental Congress started with the battle of Lexington and Concord freshly over. Also The New England militia were still encamped outside of Boston trying to drive the British out of Boston. Something had to be done.
    Effect- The Second Continental Congress established the militia as the Continental Army to represent the thirteen states. They also elected George Washington as Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.They also decided to break away from Great Britain.
  • Thomas Paine Published "Common Sense"

    Thomas Paine Published "Common Sense"
    Cause- After all taxes and battles happened; there was still a sense of reconciliation among the colonists.Paine wrote arguments against British Domination and Anarchy.
    Effect- Paine's arguments spread like wildfire and turned the colonists toward Independence greater than ever before.
  • Declaration of Independence approved

    Declaration of Independence approved
    Cause-All these events finally added to this moment- the signing of the Declaration of Independence. It was a true cry of freedom that the colonists wanted from Great Britian.
    Effect- The Declaration of Independence marked the true Independence of the American Colonists from Great Britain's rule- It set the colonists free!
