The French and Indian War
Also called known "7 years war" this was a war between the British and their colonies aganist the French and their Indian allies over territory and control of the waterways in America and parts of Canada. The British won and France was forced to give up their land. -
The Proclamation of 1763
The Proclamation of 1763 was a proclamation issued by the British King after their victory in the French and Indian war. It forbid any settlement West of the Appalachian mountains which made the English colonists annoyed because they believed that the whole point of the war was to gain land so they could settle it. -
Taxes
The French and Indian war had cost a lot of money and the British needed a way to gain that money back and since the war had been fought for the colonists the British parliament back decided to tax the colonists. -
The Sugar Act of 1764
The Sugar Act of 1764 was an act implemented by the British to try to stop the illegal smuggling sugar. It lowered the tax on sugar and molasses but enforced enforcing the collection of dues and anti-smuggling laws. -
The Boston Massacre
British soldiers stationed at Boston to enforce British taxes were being heckled by a group of rowdy colonists who began throwing snowballs and oyster shells at the soldiers. More British soldiers showed up as the colonists became bolder and in the rising hub bub, the British soldiers shot and killed five colonists.
Not enough to be called a massacre, but the event soon became propaganda and used to convince patriots to unite against Britain -
The Boston Tea Party
On the night of December 16, 1773, a group of patriots known as the Sons of Liberty led by Samuel Adams upset at the new unfair taxes dressed up as Native Americans stormed British ships and threw 342 chests of tea imported by the British East India Company into the Boston harbor. -
The Boston Blockade
The Boston Blockade shut down the port of Boston not allowing ships to dock cutting off all trade. -
The Intolerable Acts
The Intolerable Acts were laws imposed by the British after the Boston Tea Party meant to punish the colony of Massachusetts -
Continental Congress
After the events of the Boston Tea party and rising tensions with Britain, a meeting was held with delegates from every colony some notable figures being Samuel Adams, and George Washington to discuss what their next move would be. After fierce debate and division, the decision was made to write an olive branch petition to Britain with the hope of reconciliation. -
The Declaration of Independence
The second time the continental congress met they decided to officially declare their independence from Britain and wrote it all down on an official document stating their rights and liberties
