American Revolution Timeline

  • French and Indian War Ends

    French and Indian War Ends
    England and the colonies beat the French and Indians. This caused the British treasury to be drained from need of resources. In response George the third required the colonies to pay for their share of resources.
  • Navigation Acts

    Navigation Acts
    These were acts that the British Parliament used to reduce the cost of some goods. This happened by the British East India Company transporting tea directly to the colonies without any middlemen.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act taxed items like newspapers and pamphlets. This rose the idea of “No Taxation Without Representation.”
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    The Boston Massacre was an event in which British soldiers open fired on colonists after snowballs and rocks were thrown at them. After this event 5 people died.
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    The Tea Act was put in place to create a monopoly on British tea imports. This act allowed the British East India Co. to sell tea directly to the colonies with no middle men; this meant cheaper tea. Although Lord North expects the colonists would be eager, they were not happy because the British were now basically controlling the colonies.
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    During the Boston Tea Party colonists boarded a ship that had directly imported tea from Britain and threw the cargo overboard. This action was used to protest the tea tax. This caused Britain to create harsh laws on Massachusetts for the colonists actions.
  • Coercive/Intolerable Acts

    Coercive/Intolerable Acts
    The British Parliament put in place 4 acts after the Boston Tea Party to punish Massachusetts. These 4 acts were considered “intolerable” by the colonists. Some of these acts were the Port Bill act, the Quartering Act, and the Administration of Justice Act.
  • First Continental Congress

    First Continental Congress
    This Congress was held in response to the harsh rules that Britain put on Massachusetts. Attendees of this meeting included John Adams, George Washington, and Benjamin Franklin.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    This developed from a crisis between the colonists and the British. This battle was the opening shots of the American Revolution.
  • Second Continental Congress

    Second Continental Congress
    This meeting was held after the battle of Lexington and Concord. It was used to set up the continental army which George Washington would lead.
  • Battle of Saratoga

    Battle of Saratoga
    The Battle of Saratoga was the turning point in the American Revolution. This is when France joined the Americans in battle and caused America to be declared an independent country. When France joined the battle the Americans gained trained soldiers and supplies.
  • Winter at Valley Forge

    Winter at Valley Forge
    In the winter at Valley Forge the soldiers in the continental army suffered from disease, cold, and hunger. Washington was patient, courageous, and determined. This spirit had the soldiers eventually pull through by June of 1778
  • Battle of Yorktown

    Battle of Yorktown
    With the help of the French fleet the colonists forced the British to surrender. With this surrender the Revolution ended
  • U.S. Constitution Written

    U.S. Constitution Written
    Representatives from each colony gathered in Philadelphia to write the Constitution, this was done in the summer of 1787. The U.S. Constitution was written in place of the Articles of Confederation which failed.
  • U.S. Constitution Adopted

    U.S. Constitution Adopted
    This is when the constitution because the official framework of the U.S. government. This came into play by New Hampshire being ninth state to ratify it; which was needed to set it in motion.
