The French and Indian War
The French and Indian War or, The Seven Years War, was a war fought over land. The French and their Native allies were against the British, the settlers/colonists, and their Native allies. The war lasted 9 years and ended with the Treaty of Paris, 1763. -
The Proclamation of 1763
A proclamation declared by the British crown at the end of the French and Indian War. Indians were mad that the settlers/colonists were settling on their territory. The proclamation means that the settlers/colonists cannot settle on land west of the Appalachian. -
The Sugar Act
This was the first tax imposed on the settlers/colonists by the British. This was a tax on sugar and molasses. The settlers/colonists were mad at the British since they believed in taxation without representation. -
The Townshend Acts
The Townshend Acts were taxing British imports. British imports like tea, paint, paper, lead, and glass. -
The Boston Massacre
British had installed taxes on the settlers/colonists to pay off their debts. The settlers/colonists didn't like that and started to protest. The British soldiers shot at a group of protestors, killing 5 men. -
The Boston Tea Party
The settlers/colonists were sick and tired of the British taxing them. They staged a protest by boarding three British trade ships in Boston Harbor and throwing the ships' cargo of tea into the Harbor. They threw 342 chests of tea, which costs about 1-2 million dollars. -
The Intolerable Acts
After the Boston Tea Party, the British retaliated with the Intolerable Acts. They were punishments for the settlers/colonists after the acts of colonial defiance and the Boston Tea Party. -
Boston Blockade
This is the British response to the Boston Tea Party. The British closed down Boston Harbor and demanded that the settlers/colonists payback the price of the tea that was dumped. -
Continental Congress
Delegates from all 13 colonies, except for Georgia, met in Philadelphia. They organized colonial resistance against the British. for the first 2 years of the American Revolution. -
The Declaration of Independence
It's a paper that explains why the colonies should break off from Britain. States that peoples' rights cannot be taken away, the complaint against the King, and argues that the colonies have to be free in order to protect their rights. It's signed by the delegates at the bottom of the paper.
